Games 13 and 14 Preview: Chatham at Hyannis

Under manager Tom Holliday’s threat of burning the Anglers’ bats on the beaches of Chatham, the Anglers (4-7-1) put together their most impressive offensive performance of the season on Saturday in a 7-2 win over Brewster. Sunday’s doubleheader against Hyannis (5-5-2) will provide insight into whether Chatham’s outpouring was an aberration or a sign of things to come.

Probable Pitchers

Carson Whisenhunt (East Carolina) will start game one for the Anglers. The lefty has had mixed results this season, allowing three earned runs in each of his two starts — the first which lasted three innings and the second which lasted four. Still, he’s struck out 12 batters and walked two over seven innings.

Brody McCullough will oppose Whisenhunt. The right-hander has thrown eight total innings over his two starts and is yet to allow a run.

Ben Hampton (West Virginia) is in line to start game two for the Anglers. Another southpaw, Hampton has appeared in two games — one against Hyannis — and started one. He’s surrendered four hits and one run over seven innings.

Jonathan Fincher has been announced as the Harbor Hawks’ starter for game two. A left-handed pitcher, Fincher allowed two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings against Cotuit in his only start this season.

Chatham Players to Watch

Hayden Travinski (LSU) went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs in his Anglers debut Saturday. The catcher hit .242 with the Tigers in the spring, with nine of his 15 hits going for extra bases.

Caden Grice (Clemson) has recorded a hit in each of the Anglers’ past three games, going 4 for 11 with a double and three RBIs. The left-handed power hitter batted .244 in the spring and appears to be finding his swing in Chatham.

Hyannis Players to Watch

Cole McConnell has tormented opposing pitchers, hitting .344 on the season and .500 over his past 16 at-bats. McConnell has been held hitless in three of his 10 games this season, one of which came against Chatham, although he recorded two walks in the contest.

Tito Flores has logged a hit in every game he’s played this season, batting .333 over 36 at-bats. The outfielder leads the Harbor Hawks with two home runs, 12 hits and six runs.

Stat to Know — 9

Sunday’s doubleheader completes a stretch of nine games in seven days for the Anglers. Chatham is 3-4-0 so far and has dropped all three road games.

Last Time They Played

Chatham and Hyannis tied 1-1 on June 14 at Veterans Field. Hampton delivered a strong start, allowing one run on a wild pitch over four innings. Will Carsten (McLennan Community College) and Brian Holiday (Florida SouthWestern) combined to hold the Harbor Hawks scoreless over the final five innings.

The Anglers scored in the first inning when Marcus Brown (Oklahoma State) plated Cooper Ingle (Clemson) with a double. The momentum did not carry over, as Chatham was shut out for the remainder of the game.
