Roc Riggio (Oklahoma State) had also struggled recently, going hitless in 20 at-bats. He broke that streak with a single to center field against Yarmouth-Dennis, bringing in one run two games before that against Bourne. Riggio had four home runs in five games during this season’s NCAA Tournament.

Brewster has the third-best ERA in the league, giving up 28 earned runs in 11 games. The Whitecaps best pitching performance came in a shutout win over the Red Sox, who Chatham lost to last night. Against Yarmouth-Dennis, Brewster allowed eight hits, but only walked two batters the entire game.

Last Time They Played

The first matchup between both teams this season started with a pitching duel between Chris Villaman (NC State) and Joe Mancini. The latter allowed just two hits, striking out seven Chatham bats. And even when Mancini exited the game, the Anglers recorded three more hits by the end of the game.

“To win games in this league, you have to be able to pitch, you have to be able to bunt, you have to be able to play those games,” Chatham manager Tom Holliday said. “Otherwise, you either beat somebody up or you get beat.”

Chatham lost 2-1 despite Villaman not giving up a hit through three innings. Five walks paved the way for the Whitecaps’ one run, and Joe Miller (Pennsylvania) gave up a line-drive to right field in the bottom of the eighth to bring Ryan Lasko home for the winning run.
