Game 10 Preview: Chatham at Cotuit

The Anglers continue their three-game road trip, returning to Cotuit after their previous matchup was postponed due to rain last Friday. Chatham briefly got back on track since then, defeating Wareham in back-to-back matchups of a doubleheader. But manager Tom Holliday emphasized that the Anglers have struggled to back up strong pitching performances with offense, recording just three hits in last night's 5-4 loss to Bourne.

'Bottom line is, you have to outscore the opponent,' Holliday said. 'It's hard to beat anybody with three hits' our two pitchers both did great.'

Meanwhile, the Kettleers have yet to lose a game, tying against Falmouth 3-3 last night.

Probable Pitchers

Joe Miller will start for the Anglers on the mound tonight. He led all Ivy League players in innings pitched (74.1), striking out 91 batters, the second-most in Penn history. Holliday said that Miller can 'spin it' and because of the innings under his belt with the Quakers, the manager plans on using Miller for at least three to four innings. He struck out seven batters and allowed three hits in one start at Brewster.

Kenya Huggins will get the ball for the Kettleers, taking the mound for the first time this season. Huggins can get his fastball up to 94-95 mph, with his slider coming in at 86-89 mph. He struck out 97 batters this year at Chipola College, finishing with a 2.96 ERA.

Chatham Players to Watch

Thomas Caufield led the Anglers against Falmouth last week with two hits and one RBI. He notched an RBI single against the Braves last night, and spent the last four years at Millersville University. He set a program single-season record with 16 home runs in 2022.

Marcus Brown recorded three hits in his first three starts for Chatham, but he had struggled with one hit in eight at-bats during the following four games. Brown got back on track last night with an RBI single to give Chatham a 1-0 lead, striking out once in the outing.

Cotuit Players to Watch

Carter Trice could pinch hit for the Kettleers tonight after hitting a three-run homer in their 7-0 win over Bourne earlier this year. Trice struck out twice in two at-bats against Chatham, but he'll bring yesterday's momentum as Cotuit tries to notch its fifth straight win.

Caleb Lomavita started at catcher against Chatham in the opener. Lomavita was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and earned Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American honors for his play at University of California at Berkeley this year.

Stat to Know ' 32

Cotuit has a run differential of 32 through nine games this season. The Kettleers have dominated teams with their pitching, recording a combined 0.92 ERA from the 15 pitchers who have taken the mound for the team. And they've been consistent offensively as well, amounting 73 hits so far this year, which is tied with Bourne for the most in the league.

Last Time They Played

The Kettleers spoiled the Anglers' return to Veterans Field in 2022's season opener with five runs off four hits. Manager Tom Holliday said the bullpen was 'overpitching," trying to get as much velocity as possible on each pitch instead of trying to land them in the right spots.

Still, Holliday had high praise for Chris Villaman, who allowed one hit in 2.1 innings. But Cotuit took advantage of the five walks Jacob Watters gave up, six stolen bases and the two-run homer off Carson Whisenhunt. And despite matching the Kettleers' total with four hits of their own, the Anglers left eight runners on base.
