A's Pound Braves

by Brian Clark, 07-16-2008

Only a night after seemingly nothing went their way, the A's got all the breaks in an 8-0 win over the Bourne Braves Tuesday night at Veterans Field. Chatham scored first in support of starter Jake Thompson, taking a 1-0 lead in the first, as Yan Gomes' RBI double scored Kyle Seager.

A week after notching his first win against Cotuit, Thompson looked even better on Tuesday. He faced the minimum in innings two, three, four, and five. In the bottom of the fifth, Chatham took advantage of a defensive nightmare to blow the game open.

Bourne's trouble started when Gabe Cohen reached on an error from third baseman Marc Krauss. Corey Overholtzer attempted to sacrifice Cohen to second, but pitcher Ricky Bowen's throw drew Kyle Roller off the first base bag, allowing both runners to reach. Cohen scored as the next batter, Grant Green, extended his games on base streak to 27 with an RBI double. Cory Olson followed Green with an RBI single that plated Overholtzer. The errors weren't done, as what appeared to be a tailor-made double play ball from Kyle Seager was dropped by second baseman Tyler Cannon, scoring Green. Olson advanced to third and scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch. Chatham had only two hits in the fifth inning, and none of their four runs were earned.

With a 5-0 lead, Thompson finished his night with his fifth and sixth strikeouts in the sixth. The Long Beach State freshman threw six shutout innings, giving up just four hits, while striking out six and walking two. He turned it over to Jeff Lorick, who escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh. Chatham's offense added three more in the seventh. Green led off with a single, but was replaced by pinch runner Joe Mercurio after Cory Olson walked. Kyle Seager hit into a double play that pushed Mercurio to third, allowing him to score on a passed ball. Kyle Bellows doubled following a walk to Yan Gomes. Victor Sanchez came to the plate and drove both in with a 2-RBI single, giving the A's the 8-0 lead by which they would win the game.

The win for Thompson was his second in as many starts, while Ricky Bowen was the losing pitcher. The A's look to even their record at 14-14 when they travel to Y-D for a 5 PM game Wednesday at Red Wilson Field. San Diego lefty Sammy Solis will pitch for the third consecutive week against the Sox, after he suffered his first defeat of the season last Wednesday.
