The Chatham Athletic Association mourns the loss of former manager John Mayotte
Known as 'Coach Mayotte' to many in the baseball world, former Chatham Athletics manager John Mayotte passed away on January 14, 2022. He was 79 years old and a resident of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mayotte coached the A's from 1983 to 1987. His record over those five years was 103-102-5. Among those who played for him in Chatham were future major leaguers Joey Cora, Tim McIntosh, Mark Petkovsek, Marvin Freeman, Bobby Witt, Scott Coolbaugh, Albert Belle, Darrin Fletcher and Jeff Bagwell. Mayotte was named CCBL Manager of the Year in 1985.

The Hudson Falls, N.Y. native coached baseball for over five decades. At the NCAA level, his teams posted a winning record in 22 of 25 seasons. He coached at both Eckerd College in Florida (1978-90) and Troy State in Alabama (1991-2002). Mayotte guided Troy State to the Division II College World Series in 1993, oversaw the program's transition to Division I in 1994 and helped the team to NCAA Regionals in 1995 and 1997.

Mayotte was enshrined in numerous halls of fame. They include the Eckerd College Athletic Hall of Fame, the Troy University Baseball Hall of Fame, the Castleton College Athletic Hall of Fame, the Glens Falls Baseball Society Hall of Fame, the Albany Twilight League Hall of Fame and the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame among others.

In speaking to several of his Chatham players, they all remarked about how special Coach Mayotte was to them baseball wise, but also as a person. He was available to them regardless of the issue. He remained loyal to his players for years after their playing days and in so doing, had numerous life long friends.
