Game 27 Preview: Cotuit at Chatham

After losing to Cotuit by one run on July 16, the Anglers defeated Hyannis, then dropped three-straight games at home to erase the progress of a win streak days prior. Chatham will now play its eighth and final game of a stretch with games everyday before a Thursday off day, its first off day since last Tuesday.

Chatham's three-game losing streak is the third-longest in the league, just ahead of five games by Falmouth and four games by the Kettleers ' who come to Veterans Field Wednesday in search of their first win since defeating the Anglers.

Probable Pitchers

Adam Tulloch is starting for the second time since he was drafted by the Dodgers in the 17th round. He hasn't signed yet, but he has until Aug. 1 to do so. Tulloch started the season with 14-straight scoreless innings before giving up five runs in his most recent five innings, including two to Cotuit. Even with recent struggles, though, the West Virginia left hander is one of the best pitchers on the team. He's struck out 25 batters in 18 innings and has a perfect 1.0 WHIP.

Will Jacobsen has struggled this season with Cotuit, his first season as a full-time pitcher, and he didn't play at all in 2021 when Harvard's season was canceled. He has at least two earned runs in every appearance this season, and he gave up four runs in his start against the Anglers earlier this season.

Chatham Players to Watch

Caeden Trenkle possibly saved the Anglers from a blowout loss last night when he made two over the shoulder catches in the final two innings to rob extra base hits against Y-D. He's struggled in recent plate appearances and is on an 0-for-12 stretch, but last week against Cotuit he had two doubles in four at bats and came inches away from tying the game in the ninths when his double bounced off the top of the outfield fence.

Lyle Miller-Green has cooled down the last couple of games, and his seven games without a home run is the longest drought this season. He's still hitting the ball hard ' it just hasn't left the park like it did at the beginning of the season ' but lost the league's home run lead last night.

Cotuit Players to Watch

Alec Sayre has started in right field in three of Cotuit's last four games, and he has four hits in that span. He hit a double last night against Orleans and had two of the Kettleers' five hits against Bourne the game prior. In the one game he didn't play, July 19 against Brewster, the Kettleers had one hit all night. This season at Wright State, Sayre batted .383 with a .479 OBP and was named to the Horizon League First Team.

Since July 11, Luke Gold has hits in all but two of his nine games, with multi-hit games coming against Chatham and Orleans. He had a double in both of those games and hit his fourth home run of the season against Brewster. Behind Sayre, who has 11 plate appearances, Gold leads the team in OPS (.844) and extra base hits (7).

Stat to Know ' 44

The Kettleers lost a league-high 10 players to the draft and had to completely turn their roster over since its conclusion on July 13. They won on the 14 and 16, but have lost all four since, scoring one run in each of their last three games. But over those six games, they've had 44 hits, with nearly eight per game after losing their entire starting lineup. The runs haven't followed, but it seems inevitable that they will soon if the bats stay hot.

Last Time They Played

Adam Tulloch and Will Jacobsen faced off against each other on July 16, giving up five runs in 7.2 innings between the two of them. The Anglers entered the top of the ninth down two, but a leadoff double by Dominic Tamez for his first CCBL hit was followed by Trenkle's near-home run to score Tamez and put a runner on second with no outs. The offense couldn't deliver, though, and the Anglers fell 7-6.
