Game 22 Preview: Chatham at Cotuit

For the second time this season, Chatham travels to Lowell Park in Cotuit, but this time it's after back-to-back wins instead of two losses in three games. The Anglers knocked off Yarmouth-Dennis ' their second consecutive win over a first place team in the East Division ' on Thursday, 8-4, when Johnny Castagnozzi and Matt Hogan strung together two home runs in the seventh inning, providing insurance to a game-long lead Chatham had built.

Cotuit won three out of four games heading into its off day on Thursday, the latest a 6-1 win over Wareham and have tightened its grip on second place in the West Division behind Bourne. The Kettleers are 0-1 against the Braves with one game postponed, and they'll play twice more throughout the final half of the season. But for now, they'll face the Anglers, the team with the CCBL's second-longest win streak currently, the team that fell to the bottom of the East but, after those two consecutive wins, are on the verge of climbing higher if they add another win to that.

Probable Pitchers

Adam Tulloch, a recent 17th-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, returns to the mound for his third start this summer with Chatham. He went four innings in his previous two, and started the Cape League season with 14 scoreless innings before allowing four in his 15th ' a no-decision against Harwich on June 10. Across the CCBL, Tulloch sits fifth among pitchers with 23 strikeouts, and opposing batters have only hit .185 against him. The West Virginia left-hander will be followed out of the bullpen, tentatively, by Cade Winquest and Dylan Carmouche.

Will Jacobsen starts for Cotuit against the Anglers ' his second start of the season ' and through his first three appearances, he's compiled a 14.53 ERA across 4.1 innings. He's listed on Harvard's roster as an infielder and, in the Crimson's most recent season in 2020, served as their designated hitter and third baseman while starting all six games and appearing in two on the mound. Jacobsen's most recent CCBL appearance came against Orleans on June 30 when he allowed five runs, though just two were earned, in one inning. He walked two batters and three others recorded hits off of him, pushing his ERA to the second-highest on Cotuit's staff.

Chatham Players to Watch

Caeden Trenkle played a pivotal role in Chatham's latest win over Yarmouth-Dennis, going 1-for-3 with two walks and a strikeout but reaching base four of five times. He's recorded hits in three of his last four games after recording two in his previous six, creating more of logjam in the Chatham outfield for playing time between Trenkle, Logan Britt, Jake DeLeo and Matt Hogan ' along with Lyle Miller-Green, who's played at first base recently but started the season as the Anglers' right fielder.

One slot ahead of Trenkle in the order, Danny Serretti reached base safely in all five plate appearances against the Red Sox, compiling his best game at the plate for the Anglers since arriving and joining their lineup on March 4. Manager Tom Holliday said earlier in the season that the Anglers haven't received much production from their leadoff spot ' which has included Cam Chick, Seth Stephenson, Josh Rivera, Jake DeLeo and Trenkle ' but recently, Seretti's been able to stabilize the position.

Through the first 12 games, Chatham's leadoff spot went 8-for-42 (.190) with 12 strikeouts, five walks, five RBI, three runs scored and two hit-by-pitches. Seretti's presence as a switch-hitter atop the order could help that number continue to rise.

Cotuit Players to Watch

Luke Gold has appeared in 17 of Cotuit's 19 games this season, appearing as both a second and third baseman for the Kettleers while leading them with 14 RBI ' the only player on the current Cotuit roster with more than nine. He was named All-ACC after starting 44 games for Boston College at second, third and designated hitter, hitting .316 with a .576 OBP.

Nathan Martorella's .269 batting average is the fourth-highest among active Cotuit players, and he went 2-for-4 when the Kettleers last played Chatham. He singled in the first and doubled in the pivotal fifth inning, when Cotuit pulled away from the Anglers for good. At Cal, he was one of four players to appear in all 55 games this past season, starting 45 of those at first base while driving in 31 runs at the plate.

Stat to Know ' 22

Through the first half of the season, Cotuit batters have been hit by a pitch 22 times ' most in the CCBL ' while the Anglers' pitching staff has hit 22 hitters, which also sits first in the league. While Cotuit relies on its ability to generate extra-base hits, as the Kettleers are tied with Bourne for the lead with 44 and sit just one slugging percentage point behind them at .386, their ability to find other ways on base helped them wearing down pitchers, including Chatham's 10 days ago.

Last Time They Played

Despite a loss to Cotuit on July 7, Chatham had one of its strongest games at the plate this season, stringing together 10 hits but only turning them into three runs. And when that paired with a five-run fifth inning from the Kettleers, the seven-inning game shortened due to darkness turned into an 8-3 Anglers loss. Chatham had tied the game at 3 the previous inning behind back-to-back singles from Lyle Miller-Green and Logan Britt, and they joined Andrew Benefield as the three Anglers with multi-hit games against the Cotuit pitching staff.
