A's Hit .500 Plateau for First Time

by Brian Clark, 07-07-2008

In their fifth attempt at drawing their record even this season, the A's finally succeeded, defeating the Cotuit Kettleers 7-4 Monday evening at Lowell Park. Jake Thompson pitched with a lead the entire game, after Kyle Seager's RBI single in the top of the first. Thompson worked out of trouble in the first, before crusing through the second. Chatham added another run in the third on an RBI double from Kyle Bellows. The Kettleers got on the board in the fourth, as Kevin Patterson led off with a home run to right field. The A's added three more in the fifth, capitalizing on four Cotuit errors.

Down 5-1, Cotuit used the long ball once again to get closer, as USC catcher Robert Stock homered off Thompson in the bottom of the fifth, Thompson's final inning. The righty departed after allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out two. Jeff Lorick entered, allowing two runs in the seventh, capped off by Mike Bianucci's home run. Needing insurance, the A's recieved some in the top of the eighth, as Grant Green and Kyle Seager scored on a single for Kyle Bellows, his second and third runs batted in of the game.

Now with a 7-4 lead, Chatham's USC duo of Kevin Couture and Brad Boxberger were their usual selves in the eighth and ninth, as Couture retired the Kettleers in order in the eighth, before Boxberger did the same in the 9th to earn his eighth save on the season.

With their record even at 10-10, the A's hit the .500 mark for the first time all season. They'll try to move above .500 Wednesday night at Veterans Field against the Y-D Red Sox. First pitch is at 7, with the A's Extra pregame show beginning at 6:40 on chathamas.com
