Ty Madden becomes 1st Angler selected in 2021 draft by Tigers at No. 32

Former Chatham pitcher Ty Madden, a part of the 2019 Chatham team that won the East Division, became the first Angler selected in the 2021 MLB draft when the Detroit Tigers chose him with the No. 32 overall pick. It's the second consecutive year the Tigers have selected a 2019 Angler in the opening round, joining last year's No. 1 overall pick, Spencer Torkelson.

Madden, who just finished his third season at Texas, ended this past collegiate season with a 7-5 record and 2.45 ERA ' recording four double-digit strikeout games and ending the year with 10- and 8-strikeout performances against eventual-College World Series championship Mississippi State. The redshirt sophomore's campaign boosted his draft stock to as high as a top-10 pick, according to some rankings, but dropped into the Competitive Balance Round.

His best start came when he tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout against Houston on March 5, striking out 14 and not allowing a hit after the fourth inning. It followed up a sophomore campaign, during a season shortened due to COVID-19, where he compiled a 3-0 record and 1.80 ERA in 25 innings. His first collegiate complete game came last season against Boise State, and he allowed more than one earned run just once in 2020.

The summer before that season, he appeared in eight games with the Anglers and compiled a 3.33 ERA and allowed one run or fewer in four outings. He was one of three pitchers from Texas on that Anglers squad ' along with Kolby Kubichek and Dawson Merryman. Madden started six games for the Chatham pitching staff while striking out 28 batters and walking 14.

The first round of the MLB Draft took place on Sunday night, with rounds 2-10 following on Monday before the remaining 10 rounds conclude the event the following day.
