Brewer Gets First Win With Victory Over Brewster

by Brian Clark, 07-07-2008

After leading Chatham pitchers in earned run average last season, much was expected of UCLA sophomore Charles Brewer for his second summer on the Cape. However, the righty had struggled through his first two outings, going 0-1 with an ERA of 9.00. Brewer took the mound Sunday night against the Brewster Whitecaps looking for his first win of the season. He got into early trouble, as the Whitecaps put two on the board in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Brent Millville doubled and scored on Ryan Wheeler's single. The lead grew to 2-0 when the next batter, Connor Powers singled to right. The ball was misplayed by rightfielder Evan Ocheltree, scoring Wheeler and giving the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead before the A's had swung a bat.

The baseball gods took sympathy on Ocheltree in the bottom of the first inning. With Cory Olson on second, Ocheltree tapped a ball back to the mound. Nick Christianni's throw to first was wide, scoring Olson. The A's took the lead in the third inning, after Charles Brewer escaped a bases loaded jam. Grant Green and Cory Olson started the bottom of the frame with singles. Kyle Seager hit a grounder to short, and Mike Freeman's toss to second was misplayed by shortstop Derek Poppert. With the ball in leftfield, Green scored and Olson moved to third. The next batter was Victor Sanchez, and he hit a fly ball to deep right center, scoring Olson on the sacrifice fly, and the A's led 3-2.

With his first lead of the ballgame, Brewer got into a groove. He went five and two thirds, giving up six hits, only one earned run, while striking out eight. Carmine Giardina came in with two outs in the sixth. He pitched through the seventh, before giving the ball to Matt Harvey in the eighth. The North Carolina righthander retired all three batters he faced in the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, John Schiffner called on Brad Boxberger to shut down the Whitecaps. The USC righty struck out Yasmani Grandel, got James Meador on a groundout, before Derek Poppert grounded to third to end the game, earning Boxberger his seventh save on the season.

The A's improve their record to 9-10 on the season as they travel to Cotiuit on Monday. Jake Thompson will start for the A's at 5 PM as they make their fifth attempt to even their record at .500. The A's Extra Pregame Show begins at 4:40 on chathamas.com
