For the third time in seven games, the Chatham Anglers are set to face off against the Brewster Whitecaps, this time at Stony Brook Field in Brewster. The Anglers are under .500 for the first time this season following two losses and a tie in the last three days.

The Whitecaps, on the other hand, enter off their second tie with Yarmouth-Dennis this season and remain a game above .500. One more win puts them in a tie with the Red Sox for the East Division lead.

Despite recent success, the Whitecaps are still the worst hitting team on the Cape. Only six of their players are batting above .200, including Dylan Simmons, who has one hit in four at-bats. Their .530 combined OPS is by far the lowest in the league, and they only have seven combined extra base hits on the season.

Probable Pitchers

Bryce Osmond will be activated Wednesday ahead of his start and Cape League debut at Brewster. Osmond is the third Oklahoma State player on the roster, joining Trevor Martin and Caeden Trenkle. His freshman season was less than stellar, finishing with a 7.42 ERA in 57 innings. But he averaged 10.6 K/9 while only walking 33 batters.

Teddy McGraw made his season debut last week at Chatham and is back on the mound Wednesday to face the Anglers again. He gave up one run on two hits in 3.2 innings of work, picking up the loss in his first start since high school. Coming out of the bullpen for Wake Forest, he only pitched two innings or more twice.

Chatham Players to Watch

Dominic Tamez, a catcher, was activated Wednesday after Kevin Parada left the team for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Tamez started his collegiate career at Arkansas, where he made eight appearances and two starts. He then transferred to McLennan Community College where he batted .386 with a 1.116 OPS in 62 games.

David Mendham is another name that could take over after Team USA departures. Caden Grice started Chatham's first nine games at first base, but left Wednesday with Parada, opening the door for several other first basemen on the roster, including Mendham, to take over the starting job. Mendham hit a ground rule double Tuesday for his first Cape Cod Baseball League at bat and will likely split time with Michael Brown at first.

Brewster Players to Watch

Nick Biddison was the Anglers' vice last time around. The Virginia Tech Hokie got on base four times in the home-and-home last week while knocking in a run in the 5-2 Chatham loss. The Brewster leadoff man batted .235 starting half of Virginia Tech's 52 games.

Colin Davis has become a staple in the Whitecaps lineup, leading them with a .333 average. Half of his hits have gone for doubles and he's only struck out four times in nine games. Davis was a freshman All-American at Coastal Carolina in 2019 but stumbled in 2021, batting just .208.

Stat to Know ' 18

The Whitecaps have attempted a steal 20 times this season. They've succeeded in 18 of those. Compare that to the Anglers, who tie Brewster for the league lead in steal attempts, but have been caught stealing ten times. With one of Chatham's primary catchers no longer on the roster, whether or not someone else will be able to easily take that role and throw runners out remains unknown.

Last time they played

After a 4-2 loss at Veterans Field, the Whitecaps came back after the off-day to dominate the Anglers last Friday. They scored four times in the first three innings in Brandon Sproat's season debut, holding Chatham to just two runs ' both coming on an RBI single by Jake DeLeo ' for a 5-2 Brewster win.
