A's Erase Deficit, Win In Extras

by Brian Clark, 07-03-2008

For the second time in three nights, the A's needed extra innings to settle a game. Friday night at Veterans Field, they made up for their extra inning loss to Cotiuit on Tuesday by defeating the Falmouth Commodores 6-5. Early on, it appeared as if it'd be a long night, as Louisville pitcher Justin Marks, making his first start of the summer, allowed four runs in the first three innings, as Falmouth capped it off in the fourth with a solo home run from catcher Michael Thomas.

Down 5-1, the A's began to chip away in the bottom of the inning, as Grant Green doubled in Corey Overholtzer and Kyle Bellows. The next batter was Cory Olson, and he drove in Green for his fifth RBI in just his eighth game with the team. The A's tied the game the very next inning, as Kyle Bellows doubled to left center, scoring on Gregg Glime's single.

While the A's recieved timely hitting, the bullpen was magnificent. Jeff Lorick faced the minimum nine batters through three shutout innings before turning the ball over to Carmine Giardina, who quickly found himself in trouble. Faced with runners at the corners and one out, Ryan Jones laid down a suicide squeeze. Fortunately for the A's, it was poorly executed, and the ball went right back to Giardina, who flipped to Gregg Glime to retire the approaching Jimmy Cesario. The next play saw the defensive highlight of the game, as Michael Thomas hit a screaming ground ball to third, which was hauled in by a sprawling Victor Sanchez, who quickly got to his feet and retired Thomas with a laser throw across the diamond.

Scoreless in the ninth, the game went to extras, where the A's capitalized in the bottom of the tenth. Kyle Bellows led off with his second double of the game, missing a home run by only a few feet. In a freak turn of events, he moved on to third when Michael Thomas, the catcher, made a poor throw back to Preston Claiborne. With the infield and outfield now drawn in to try to cut off the winning run, Gregg Glime hit a roller back to the mound. It deflected off of Claiborne's glove and past shortstop Joey Wong, scoring Bellows and giving the A's a 6-5 win in dramatic fashion.

With four innings of shutout relief, Carmine Giardina won his first game of 2008. Following Justin Marks' Chatham debut, Adam Warren will make his A's debut on Friday night in Orleans. The North Carolina pitcher will face off against the Cardinals at Eldredge Park in Orleans at 7, with A's Extra beginning on chathamas.com at 6:40
