CCBL, Holliday Expect Cape League Baseball this summer

The Cape Cod Baseball League confirmed Monday that it still intends to start the upcoming season as scheduled on June 13.

“The Cape Cod Baseball League is continuing to monitor the updates from local, state and federal officials on what we may expect in the coming days, weeks and months ahead,” the CCBL public relations office restated in an updated release. “League officers are meeting frequently via conference call discussing alternative plans should the need arise for the 2020 season.”

Meanwhile, Anglers’ manager Tom Holliday is continuing to prepare for the upcoming season.

“I think it’s devastating if we don’t have Cape Cod League baseball,” Holliday said.

The two-year Anglers’ manager expects to return six players from his 2019 team that won 24 games and the East Division regular season title. He also confirmed that multiple former Anglers have reached out to express interest in returning, depending on how the upcoming Major League Baseball draft unfolds.

“Some of those guys that we had last summer, if they don’t go in the first five rounds, they’ll want to come back,” Holliday said of the draft’s uncertainty. “Now I’ve got guys that want to come back that, quite frankly, I’d like to have back.”

Aside from roster management, Holliday has also been brainstorming ways to bring baseball back to Chatham.

“Even if we have to shrink down to just the month of July and start playoffs on [August 1],” Holliday said. “We’ve just got to keep our fingers crossed, and hopefully everybody says, ‘Hey, we’re not going to let this thing beat us.’”

Holliday’s full interview is available on the latest episode of The Hook, the Chatham Anglers podcast on the Cape Cod Baseball Network.
