Cape Cod Baseball League continues plan to begin June 13

With 73 days until Chatham’s season-opener, the Cape Cod Baseball League reaffirmed its plan to begin the 2020 season on June 13, as previously scheduled. After its monthly meeting via teleconference on Wednesday evening, the league released an updated statement regarding the season’s status.

“The Cape Cod Baseball League is continuing to monitor the updates from local, state, and federal officials on what we may expect in the coming days, weeks, and months ahead,” the release said.

Chatham’s opponent that night will be Falmouth, and the first game at Veterans Field is one day later against Orleans. Since 1946, the CCBL has operated every summer, including 57 years in a modern era where the Anglers have won five championships — their most recent coming in 1998. This season, the Anglers return six players from last year's group that clinched the East Division title before falling to Harwich in the EDS.

On March 12, the NCAA canceled its winter and spring championships amid the coronavirus outbreak, which included the College World Series, and in the following days individual conferences suspended competition. College baseball halted with Florida and Louisville as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams — and three Anglers on their rosters.

“These are challenging times for everyone, and we continue to hope there will be a summer Cape League season,” Chatham Athletic Association president Steve West said.
