Game 36 preview: Yarmouth-Dennis at Chatham

Chatham came off the longest break of its season with a dominant, 5-0 win at Red Wilson Field. After power was restored to Veterans Field on Wednesday afternoon, the Anglers will conclude their home-and-home series with the Red Sox Thursday at 7 p.m.

The two came into Wednesday tied atop the East Division at 42 points apiece. But the A’s left up a pair of points after its victory.

“A win against them is a four point swing,” Manager Tom Holliday said yesterday. “You have to beat these guys when you can.”

Cole Ayers (State College of Florida), Mason Hazelwood (Kentucky) and Dawson Merryman (Texas) combined for a two-hit shutout and Chatham’s offense mustered five runs, including three in the seventh inning off an RBI single and two walks with the bases loaded.

Probable pitchers

Kolby Kubichek (Texas) will get the start for Chatham. The right-hander has been the most consistent starter for the A’s this season with a 1.08 ERA in 25 innings. He’s allowed earned runs in just two of his seven appearances and his strikeout numbers have increased as the season has gone on. In nine innings against Y-D this season, he has allowed just two hits. Kubichek was originally not named an All-Star, but he closed out the game with two scoreless outs in the ninth and was credited with the win.

Mark DiLuia (Maryland) is expected to make his first start in the Cape League this season. DiLuia was activated on July 22 and hasn’t pitched since May 23 for the Terrapins. In his sophomore season, the right-handed pitcher had a 5.45 ERA in 38 innings of work. He averaged a strikeout an inning and gave up seven home runs this season.

Player to watch

Kaden Polcovich (Oklahoma State) comes into Thursday with a 10-game hit streak. In the first game of their home-and-home, Polcovich drove in a run off a triple that landed down the right field foul line. The switch hitter is tied for fourth in the Cape League with 23 RBIs this season.

Stat to know — 25

The Anglers have scored 25 more runs than the Red Sox in their five matchups this season. Most notably, Chatham defeated Y-D by a score of 15-1 at Veterans Field on July 1.

Season series

Chatham is 4-0-1 against the Red Sox this season. Thursday’s matchup will be their final contest this season.
