Game 30 preview: Hyannis at Chatham

After its first win since July 8, Chatham will complete a home-and-home series with Hyannis at Veterans Field at 7 p.m.

The two faced off on Saturday at McKeon Park and the Anglers used a three-run ninth inning, aided by an RBI single from Kaden Polcovich (Oklahoma State) and capped off by a two-run defensive error, to win. Kolby Kubichek (Texas) threw five scoreless innings and Anthony Vilar (Miami) hit a two-run homer, as well.

The victory broke a winless streak that spanned back to Monday.

“Three losses in a row is a lot in the league,” manager Tom Holliday said. “That’s like losing nine.”

Probable pitchers

Luke Bartnicki (Georgia Tech) is expected to start with 10 days of rest. In his last outing on July 4, the left-hander came into the final four innings against Orleans with a 8-1 lead and left it allowing five earned runs on seven walks. Eventually, infielder Jorge Arenas (Stetson) came in for a one-out save to hold the lead. Bartnicki has 21 strikeouts in 14 innings of work with a 1.93 WHIP for the A’s.

RJ Dabovich (Arizona State) will come in relief for the Anglers. The right-hander has been one of the most consistent pitchers for the A’s, allowing an earned run or fewer in all five of his appearances. In 12 innings this season, Dabovich has struck out 15 batters with a 3.00 ERA.

Another Yellow Jacket, Jonathan Hughes (Georgia Tech) will start alongside Bartnicki. Hughes, a righty, has only appeared in one game for the Harbor Hawks, a 13-8 win over Bourne. In two innings, Hughes allowed six hits and three earned runs.

Player to watch

Anthony Vilar’s (Miami) statline from Saturday doesn’t jump off the page — 1-for-4, a two-run homer. But after a long ball in his first at-bat to right, he hit a deep blast to center that was caught on the warning track and an opposite field shot that almost made it over the fence. Vilar hasn’t shown his power much in the Cape League, but he had five home runs this season for the Hurricanes.

Stat to know — 274

Following 12 strikeouts from Hyannis hitters and eight against Kolby Kubichek (Texas), Chatham leads the Cape League in strikeouts thrown. Its pitching staff has fanned 274 batters, averaging 9.45 a game.

Season series

Chatham is 3-0 against the Harbor Hawks, winning all three matchups by a combined score of 17-8.
