Game 25 preview: Chatham at Harwich

Chatham enters Tuesday’s matchup with Harwich having never lost to the Mariners under second-year manager Tom Holliday. The A’s will travel to Whitehouse Field at 6:30 p.m. for their third of six regular-season meetings with Harwich.

After the A’s swept all six regular season and both postseason meetings with the Mariners last season, Chatham has won both games in 2019. The Anglers are fresh off a dominant win against Orleans, 6-1, where Parker Scott (Oklahoma State) tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out nine. The Anglers scored three runs in the first, more than enough for their dominant pitching.

Harwich continues to rely on its pitching staff in 2019, as the Mariners have both the league’s lowest batting average (.225) and lowest ERA (3.17). They enter having won three of their last four.

Probable Pitchers

Zarion Sharpe (UNC Wilmington) has been commanding on the mound this season. He’s pitched 10 innings in three different appearances, allowing just one unearned run in his first outing. Sharpe’s WHIP is just 0.90, as the lefty surrendered just four walks and five hits to opponents. In his last outing, Sharpe enabled the A’s comeback win by keeping the Orleans offense off the scoreboard on July 3.

Jeremy Wu-Yelland (Hawaii) was going to pitch three innings on Saturday at Cotuit, but the dominance of Zach Cable (Lentucky) in front of him and the darkness-shortened seven-inning game limited his outing to just one shutout inning. Wu-Yelland picked up his first save of the season, striking out two of the three batters the lefty faced. After walk issues plagued his relief appearance in Bourne, Wu-Yelland has rebounded with back-to-back shut down relief performances.

Connor McCollough (Kansas State) will start against Chatham for the second-consecutive week. On July 2, seven days prior, McCollough tossed 4.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one unearned run. The A’s predominantly left-handed hitting lineup was unable to find success, as the right-hander struck out five batters. McCollough has a 1.08 ERA in three outings.

Player to Watch

Cooper Davis (Vanderbilt) started his first Cape League game for the Anglers on Monday. While some players have started slow and had difficulty adjusting in their first few at-bats, Davis led off with a single and posted a 3-for-5 night with a run scored in his debut. Davis commanded center field and stole a base.

Stat to know — 61-31

After a blip 3-0 loss to Brewster on Sunday, Chatham continued its dominance over East Division opponents with the five-run win against Orleans. Chatham has now outscored divisional opponents 61-31 this season, with an 8-1-1 record.

Last time they met

Chatham and Harwich played at Whitehouse Field on July 2. Harwich grabbed two early runs after poor Anglers defense, and the A’s rallied back. Charlie Welch hit a pinch-hit RBI single to tie the game in the seventh, and the Anglers manufactured a run in the eighth without a hit. Austin Vernon (NC Central) and Dawson Merryman (Texas) escaped jams with strikeouts and secured the 3-2 Anglers victory.
