Game 13 preview: Chatham at Bourne

Game 13 preview: Chatham at Bourne

Off three games in less than 36 hours at Veterans Field, Chatham (7-4-1) received a day off because the rain cancelled a scheduled game with Orleans. Now, the A’s travel to Doran Park in Bourne (4-6) to take on the Braves at 6 p.m. Wednesday night. After splitting its doubleheader with Chatham Sunday, Bourne lost 2-0 to Yarmouth-Dennis in a make-up game Monday night.

Chatham enters Wednesday’s game having won three of their last four. On Monday against Cotuit, Jamal O’Guinn (USC) and Kaden Polcovich (Northwest Florida State) both hit home runs, and Alex Toral (Miami) hit an RBI double in the seventh as the A’s pitching shut down Cotuit and won 4-2.

Probable Pitchers

Zarion Sharpe (UNC Wilmington) — Sharpe has now made two appearances for Chatham, but only one of them actually counted. The lefty made a start on June 19 in a fog out against Y-D, pitching three innings that were wiped out in the fourth. His only actual appearance, three relief innings against Falmouth, Sharpe shut down the Commodores, but allowed one unearned run in the ninth and picked up the loss.

Jeremy Wu-Yelland (Hawaiii) — Wu-Yelland just celebrated his 20th birthday on Monday, and on Wednesday, he’ll pitch in relief for the A’s. Wu-Yelland has made two appearances and thrown six innings for Chatham. In his first outing, the lefty threw three scoreless innings as a starter and struck out two. His second outing, hampered by inconsistent Chatham defense behind him, Wu-Yelland allowed four runs, three earned in three innings against Brewster.

Harrison Rutkowski (Rutgers) will be the Braves starter. For the third time in four starts, the Anglers lineup will face a lefty. In Rutkowski’s first outing, he threw four innings at Orleans, allowing two earned runs. Due to lack of run support, he picked up the loss. In his second outing though, Rutkowski threw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits to Harwich. Through 11 innings, he’s struck out 11 and walked just one.

Player to watch

Kaden Polcovich (Northwest Florida State) said he thinks he’s starting to find his swing. On Monday, Polcovich homered from the right side, singled from the left, then nearly homered again from the left. His versatility is a valuable asset both as a utility defender and switch-hitting batter. He puts the ball in play — with just five strikeouts in 37 at-bats — and he gets on base (OBP is .381).

Stat to know — .162

Through 12 games, Chatham is hitting .162 with runners in scoring position, the lowest of any team in the Cape League. If the Anglers bump up this number, Chatham could improve on its 4.33 runs per game and take pressure off its pitching staff.

Last time they met

Chatham and Bourne played on Sunday in a doubleheader at Veterans Field. The A’s won game one, 8-2, behind an O’Guinn grand slam and a Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State) two-run homer. In game two, the A’s sloppy defense and three errors gave the Braves a couple runs, and Bourne won 4-2 to split the doubleheader.
