Games 10 and 11 preview: Bourne at Chatham

Chatham picked up its first victory in over a week on Saturday after thunderstorms and fog muddled with the A’s schedule. On Sunday, the Anglers (5-3-1) play their second doubleheader of the season against the Bourne Braves at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

In the A’s last game, Chatham rattled off four unanswered runs against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in a 4-2 win at Red Wilson Field. The Braves are coming off a 3-4 seven inning loss to Brewster in which the Whitecaps scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the final inning.

Probable Pitchers

Kolby Kubichek (Texas) has been one of the Anglers most consistent pitchers, and he’s scheduled to start game two of the doubleheader. Kubichek is coming off four no-hit innings on June 15 against Y-D. In two appearances this season, the righty has a 0.71 WHIP with no earned runs in seven innings.

Austin Vernon (NCCU) will get the start in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Vernon last allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings and has seven strikeouts in his two appearances in 2018.

Luke Bartnicki (Georgia Tech) and Cole Ayers (State College of Florida) are expected to come in relief in games one and two, respectively. Bartnicki, a lefty, most recently allowed a hit and four walks in three innings and Ayers lone appearance against Falmouth saw five strikeouts in three scoreless frames. Both have not given up an earned run this season.

For Bourne, JP Woodard (Lafayette) will start the first game and Ryan Cusick (Wake Forest) will begin the second. Woodard, a lefty, has just pitched 0.1 innings for the Braves, allowing two walks on June 15. And Cusick gave up two runs on three hits over 3.2 innings in his only start of the season against the Falmouth Commodores.

Players to watch

Tyler Doanes (West Virginia) went 3-for-3 against Yarmouth-Dennis, but the third hit did not count because of the rain. The right-handed second baseman scored two runs and stole a base in the win. Doanes is hitting .333 in 15 at-bats this season.

Ben Ramirez (USC) knocked his first home run of the season against the Red Sox on Saturday. Ramirez said he’s tried to make his swing more compact and has worked on “more pop.” The returning Angler from 2018’s squad is hitting .233 with seven hits and three walks in nine games.

Stat to know — 441

Ramirez hit his first home in 441 days on Saturday. The last time he’d rounded the bases was April 2018 as a freshman at USC against Arizona State. His knock extended the A’s lead against the Red Sox to two.

Last season series

Chatham swept last year’s series in four games and won by an average of three runs.
