Chatham (4-1) will make its lone trip off Cape Cod for the season when the Anglers travel to Spillane Field in Wareham (2-1-1) on Sunday for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Both games will play seven innings.

The A’s just concluded a three-game homestand, in which they went 2-1, beating Yarmouth-Dennis 7-3 behind a five-run fifth inning and dominant pitching yet again. Mason Hazelwood (Kentucky) threw an immaculate seventh inning, and Chatham took advantage of the inconsistent Red Sox pitching and defense by turning mistakes into runs.

A’s manager Tom Holliday said earlier in the week that he didn’t want to have any positional players play twice on Sunday. They currently have 15 active position players, meaning that a few guys will have to play more than seven innings on Sunday.

Probable Pitchers

Hadyn King (UNLV) threw three perfect innings in Tuesday’s win against Cotuit. King shut down the Kettleers, striking out three, and enabled the A’s to mount an eventual comeback win, 7-6. The lefty will try starting for the A’s on Sunday.

Daniel Federman (Miami) will make his debut for the Anglers on Sunday. The 6’1 righty arrived in the middle of the week after posting impressive numbers at Miami. In 2018, he was a freshman All-American with a 2.25 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 54 innings. This year, Federman threw 48.2 innings and posted a 3.51 ERA.

Ian Bedell (Missouri) is the Gatemen’s projected starter for game one on Sunday. After making a few appearances out of the bullpen as a freshman, the 6’2 righty from Missouri struck out 36 in 40.1 innings last season and allowed just a 1.56 ERA.

Lefty Brendan Cellucci (Tulane) is expected to begin game two. Cellucci made one appearance for Wareham in 2018, throwing one inning and allowing no runs. Last season for Tulane, he threw 42 innings with a 5.57 ERA.

Players to watch

Florida catcher Brady Smith has been activated ahead of Sunday’s games. He arrived during the middle of Saturday night’s win and will be available to catch and play infield. Smith isn’t new to the Cape, as he played for Cotuit last season, hitting .333 with a home run. The last two years at UF, Smith has been a fixture in the Gators’ lineup, and was their primary catcher in 2019.

Jorge Arenas (Stetson) hit two doubles and now has five hits in 11 at-bats this season. Arenas did make one error on Saturday night, but has shined defensively, assisting to turn multiple double plays and throwing runners out on well-hit balls down the line. Holliday said that Arenas shortened his swing, and the results showed on Saturday.

“I do because Arenas hits two doubles tonight,” Holliday said of the A’s shortening swings. “We have too many guys trying to hit home runs that are not home run guys. With this new home run swing era that we’re in, you’re going to strike out a lot. Up here, you’re gonna strike out a lot anyway. Jorge was a classic tonight.”

Stat to know — 26.1%

Jamal O’Guinn’s (USC) walk percentage is 26.1% through five games. He’s walked at-least once in every single Chatham game, six in total, including two four-pitch walks, one on Friday and one on Saturday. When he does see strikes, O’Guinn has six hits and three RBIs.

Last season

Chatham and Wareham last met in the CCBL championship series. The Gatemen defeated the A’s in a two-game sweep, and Wareham won all four regular season meetings.
