Dozens of Chatham Anglers past and present competed in the 2019 NCAA Division I Baseball Regional Championships. Starting on Friday, May 31, 18 current players and even more Chatham alumni played in the opening round.

Here are some the best performances from the regional round.

Shea Langeliers ('17) makes NCAA tournament history

In the midst of Baylor’s quest to make the Super Regional, Shea Langeliers not only propelled  Baylor to a 24-6 win over Nebraska Omaha — he broke the NCAA tournament record with 11 RBIs. His performance led the Bears to a matchup with No. 1 UCLA, which Baylor ultimately lost, 11-6.

The junior catcher went 5 for 6 with three home runs on Saturday, including six RBIs in the sixth and seventh innings. The previous record of 10 RBIs was shared by Kevin Brown (2001) and Connor Kaiser (2018).

After a double with one out in the first inning, Langeliers hit the first pitch over the left field wall and gave the Bears an early advantage. His next at-bat, he hit another home run — this time a solo shot — to extend the lead to 4-1.

He reached base in the fourth with a two-run single as Nebraska Omaha switched to its third pitcher on the day. The next inning, he walked in his sixth run on a full count.

With the game already a blowout, Langeliers knocked a double with the bases loaded and topped off his historic day with a three-run home run — his third long ball of the day — to break the NCAA tournament record. In the ninth, Langeliers struck out with a runner in scoring position.

“I think this game will probably be one of the most meaningful games for me as a hitter,” Langeliers told the LA Times, “probably for the rest of my baseball career.”

Austin Bergner (‘17, ‘18) shines when it matters most

North Carolina’s Austin Bergner shut down Tennessee’s offense and led the Tar Heels to their ninth regional title in program history. Bergner allowed two runs in seven innings of work to a team that averaged more than six runs a game in 2019.

On Sunday, Bergner was spotted a four-run lead — which he would never give up.

After allowing two runs in the first four innings, Bergner allowed just two hits in the next three innings. Sunday’s start was Bergner’s highest pitch count of the season, but that didn’t faze the junior as he lead UNC to another Super Regional appearance.

Kendrick Calilao (‘19) has perfect day

In Florida’s lone win this weekend against Army, Kendrick Calilao was perfect — 3-for-3 — with 5 RBIs, more than a third of the Gators scoring production. The first baseman only had one RBI in the previous six games prior to Saturday’s win.

After a Florida walk, Calilao homered down the left field line. Then, the freshman hit an RBI single toward on the first pitch to score teammate Wil Dalton for the second-straight inning.

Calilao extended the Gators’ lead after he knocked in two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, both from  sacrifice flies. He had another single in the final inning to maintain his perfect day at the plate.

Calilao’s second career NCAA tournament game was the only time he hit a perfect 3-for-3 during his freshman campaign.

Drew Mendoza’s (‘18) hot weekend leads Florida State to Super Regionals

As Florida State went a perfect 3-0 over the weekend, Drew Mendoza went 7-for-15 with 5 RBIs for the Seminoles. His best game came on Friday in Florida State’s closet matchup of the NCAA tournament — Mendoza had three runs, two home runs and four RBIs in FSU’s 13-7 win over Florida Atlantic.

In the Seminoles’ opener, Mendoza led his team’s five-run second inning with a home run to right center that plated two runs. In the sixth with a 6-3 lead, he homered again to right to extend FSU’s lead to five.

Against Georgia the following day, his two hits were part of a 12-run effort by Florida State as it won by nine. And in its clincher to make the Super Regional, Mendoza’s two hits opened up another double-digit scoring night for the Seminoles as it won, 10-1.

More standouts:

Spencer Torkelson (‘18, ‘19) had 5 total RBIs in Arizona State’s three NCAA tournament games. The sophomore drove in two against Stony Brook and homered in the sixth inning against Southern Mississippi the following night to give the Sun Devils a 12-6 lead. Eventually, ASU would blow its 6-run lead and lose on Sunday, 13-12.

Alex Toral (‘19) went 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs in Miami’s blowout win over Central Michigan. His two home runs were tied for the most he’s had in a game.

RJ Dabovich (‘19) pitched 6.1 innings on 112 pitches and recorded six strikeouts for Arizona State on Saturday. The sophomore picked up his seventh win of the season as ASU went on to defeat Stony Brook, 13-5.

Greg Jones (‘18) drove in all three of North Carolina Wilmington’s runs against Tennessee on Saturday in a 10-3 loss. The lead-off hitter had two hits and drove in three runs for only the third time this season.
