Three former Chatham Anglers were tabbed 2019 College Preseason All-Americans last week.

Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State), Tristin English (Georgia Tech) and Andre Pallante (UC-Irvine) each received the honor.

Torkelson was named a PG Preseason First Team All-American as a designated hitter after leading the nation in home runs (25) in 2018. The Sun Devil hit .320 in his first season in Tempe, breaking Arizona State’s freshman home run record (11), previously held by Barry Bonds, before the end of March. He was tabbed as Perfect Game’s “Freshman of the Year” at the end of the season.

“The arms that I faced day in and day out on the Cape made me a better hitter with a more solid approach,” Torkelson said. “It’s really cool getting that kind of recognition for my hard work.”

On the Cape, the right-handed hitter led the Anglers with 3 postseason and 7 regular season home runs, finished second on the team in total batting average and RBIs, all while earning CCBL All-League honors. He started the Cape League season in Chatham, but left for Team USA after the first two weeks of the season. After international competition ended, Torkelson returned to the Cape for the second half of the season and carried the Anglers’ longest on-base streak into the late-season playoff push.

“Playing every day and learning how to take care of my body all summer after a long season [at ASU] will definitely help me stay healthy and play to my best ability,” he said.

English was named a PG Preseason All-American as both a hitter and pitcher after playing two ways for the Anglers during the 2018 summer. The Georgia Tech product was named CCBL All-League as a utility player after putting up a .300 batting average with five home runs and posting a 2.21 ERA.

“Going out and succeeding against the best in the country definitely gives me a confidence boost going into the season,” he said.

English was also a key part of Chatham’s postseason run, including an 8.2 inning performance in Game 2 of the East Division Championship Series.

Pallante, a 2017 Chatham alum, dominated during his only summer in Chatham. The right-hander posted a 1.10 ERA in 12 appearances for the A's, highlighted by a scoreless 1.1 innings against Orleans in the East Division playoffs. Pallante allowed an earned run in just two appearances all year long, and followed his Cape League success with a 1.60 ERA in the spring and a stint with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
