Game 44 Preview: Chatham at Orleans

In an annual Cape League tradition, the Chatham Anglers will play the Orleans Firebirds on Thursday in the final game of the regular season.

This year’s contest will be held at Eldredge Park in Orleans and, unlike most years, there is nothing on the line for either team.

Chatham has already locked in home-field advantage and will play the Harwich Mariners in the East Division semifinals. Wednesday, the Anglers defeated the Firebirds, eliminating them from playoff contention and making Thursday’s game the final contest of the season for Orleans.

The A’s picked up two players since Wednesday's game — pitcher CJ Dandeneau (Connecticut) and infielder Cole Heavilin (Northern Kentucky).

Dandeneau is a rising senior who pitches out of the bullpen for UConn. He has spent the past three summers playing for the Plymouth Pilgrims of the NECBL before joining the New Bedford Blue Sox this summer. With New Bedford, Dandeneau was an All-Star. He pitched 22 innings over 16 games, accumulating 37 strikeouts with a 1.22 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and six saves.

Heavilin made 39 starts this spring for Northern Kentucky and knocked 25 hits . Heavilin originally attended Wagner and played five games with the Seahawks in 2016 before transferring. This summer, he played with the Chillicothe Paints of the Prospect League where he hit .267 in 21 games.

Holliday is planning to use a plethora of pitchers today in order to keep arms fresh for the playoffs. Some pitchers who may see action on the mound include Dandeneau, Joseph Lowder (Appalachian State), Colby Morris (Middlebury), Reeves Martin (New Orleans), Brock Riley (Salem State) and Spencer Van Scoyoc (Arizona State).
