Game 41 Preview: Chatham vs. Falmouth

The Chatham Anglers (20-17-3) got back to their winning ways Saturday with a win over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks at McKeon Park. Sunday, the A’s will return to Veterans Field to face the Falmouth Commodores (21-18-1) at 7 p.m. before having an off day Monday prior to their final three games of the regular season.

Chatham remains in the two-spot in the East Division, five games behind the first-place Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and 3.5 games ahead of the Harwich Mariners. The Red Sox and Mariners faced off Saturday, with the division leaders emerging victorious, 8-5.

Alek Manoah (West Virginia) will make his seventh start of the season. The 6’7” right-hander has been one of the A’s top arms this summer, striking out 42 batters in 28.1 innings of work while allowing no more than three hits in a single outing.

Last time they met

Since their last game against the Commodores nearly three weeks ago, the Anglers have played all eight other Cape League teams. Chatham visited Arnie Allen Diamond for a doubleheader on July 10 and came out with two victories. The two-game sweep broke a losing spell for the A’s, who had lost four of five games heading into the twin bill.

In game one, a leadoff double from John Rave (Illinois State) followed by an Adam Fogel (Hawaii) single produced the sole run of the game in a 1-0 triumph for Chatham.

Game two featured nine runs in a 7-2 win for the A’s. Again, the visitors hopped out to an early lead as Kyle McCann (Georgia Tech) and Drew Mendoza (Florida State) smacked first-inning RBI singles.

An inning later, Blake Sabol (USC) smoked a three-run shot to give the Anglers a five-run lead. The win gave Chatham the season series lead over Falmouth, who took one from the A’s at Veterans Field on June 26.

Last night

The Anglers — who suffered a 12-5 loss to the Harbor Hawks at McKeon Park on July 18 — extracted revenge on their West Division foes with a 9-2 win Saturday.

Colin Simpson (Oklahoma State) mashed a two-run double in the top of the first inning before Tristin English (Georgia Tech) added an RBI single to put the A’s ahead by three. Simpson added a grand slam — his fourth long ball of the season — in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach for the home team.

Jack Conlon (San Jacinto) posted his best outing of the season, tossing four hitless innings while striking out a season-high five batters.
