Game 21 Preview: Chatham at Falmouth

Following back-to-back losses at the hands of the Orleans Firebirds, the Chatham Anglers (9-9-2) look to get back on track against the Falmouth Commodores (9-10-1) on Friday at Guv Fuller Field.

Chatham’s offense has not looked good since scoring 13 runs against the Harwich Mariners on Tuesday. In 18 innings against Orleans over the last two days, the A’s have mustered only eight hits — seven singles and one double — and only had one runner reach third base.

Only two hitters — Michael Busch (North Carolina) and John Rave (Illinois State) — had hits in both games over the Firebirds.

"It's obvious, we're not playing good offensive baseball,” Anglers manager Tom Holliday said.

On the mound, one bad inning was the difference in both games. The Firebirds scored all three of the their runs Wednesday in the ninth inning and all three of their runs Thursday in the third inning. If you take away those two innings of baseball, the A’s pitching staff surrendered only five hits while striking out 15 batters.

Falmouth is coming into the game riding a hot streak, as it has a 7-2-1 record over its last ten games. Against the Cotuit Kettleers on Thursday, the Commodores scored 17 runs, tied for the most by a team in one game this season. Cameron Cannon (Arizona) led the way with three hits, including a home run, and six RBIs. Logan Davidson (Clemson), David Sims (Murray State) and Kyle Stowers (Stanford) also had three hits during the game.

Chatham first played Falmouth on June 26, falling 4-2 in 11 innings. Maverick Handley (Stanford) hit a two-run home run that just curled inside the right-field foul pole in the top of the 11th to put the Commodores up for good. Chatham was winning that game 1-0 heading into the ninth inning, but gave up two runs in the frame to fall behind. A Kyle McCann (Georgia Tech) round-tripper sent the game to extras, but the Anglers were unable to score more runs.

The first meeting between the two teams was scheduled to be played on June 23, but was rescheduled to July 10 due to weather.

Rave said he believes the offense will return to its potential today against the Commodores.

“We know we're a good offense so it's really frustrating not scoring,” Rave said. “But I think we'll get back on track tomorrow and things will start to turn around.”
