Spencer Torkelson named Week 2 Coca-Cola Player of the Week

Chatham’s Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State) was named the Week 2 Coca-Cola Player of the Week by the Cape Cod Baseball League after another standout stretch of games. Torkelson, who departed for Team USA on Monday, went 7-for-14 with six RBI and six extra-base hits during the second week of the season. He and Wareham’s Andrew Vaughn (Cal) are tied for the league’s lead in home runs (five) and RBI (14).

Torkelson’s 10-game hit streak and 12-game on-base streak has propelled the A’s offense over the past two weeks. The rising sophomore is one of two Chatham players, along with Greg Jones (UNC Wilmington) to start all 12 games this season. In each game, Torkelson has played in right field and batted third or fourth.

Torkelson’s departure for Team USA does not end his time with Chatham. A’s manager Tom Holliday said Torkelson told him he’d be back with the team after his time with the national team is up on June 15.

“That's how you play for money,” Holliday said about Torkelson’s recent performances. “What he's doing, he's selling every scout on the east coast. The ones on the west coast already know who he is.”

The Anglers will play their first game without Torkelson tonight when the Falmouth Commodores visit Veterans Field at 7 p.m.
