Stowers, Gray selected in 2nd Round of MLB Draft

Two Chatham Anglers alumni were drafted in the first two rounds of the 2018 MLB Draft on Monday night.

The Seattle Mariners selected Josh Stowers (Chatham ’17), an outfielder out of the University of Louisville, was selected with the 54th overall pick and the Cincinnati Reds drafted Josiah “JoJo” Gray (Chatham ’17), a right-handed pitcher out of Le Moyne College (NY), with the 72nd overall selection.

Both Stowers and Gray had big summers with the Anglers in 2017. In 24 games with Chatham, Stowers hit .250 while stealing a team-high 12 bases and hitting two home runs. Gray made 12 appearances out of the pen for Chatham and struck out 21 batters while noticing three saves.

Heading into the draft, Stowers was ranked No. 124 overall by Baseball America and No. 146 overall by MLB.com. In 2017, Stowers was the starting left fielder for the Cardinals as they advanced all the way to the College World Series. This spring, Stowers shifted over to center field and started 62 of Louisville’s 64 games. He hit .331 on the season with a .477 on-base percentage, 27 extra-base hits, 72 runs and 36 stolen bases.

Gray was the No. 101 ranked overall by Baseball Americaand No. 102 by MLB.com in their last pre-draft rankings. After spending his first two seasons at Le Moyne as both a shortstop and a relief pitcher, Gray spent the entire spring as a starting pitcher. He finished 11-0 with a 1.25 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 93.1 innings while earning 2018 East Region Pitcher of the Year honors by three different organizations.

Twenty-eight Cape Cod Baseball League alumni were selected on the first day of the draft. This included four of the top five picks in the first round. Last season 20 CCBL alumni were selected in the first two rounds of the draft, including J.B. Bukauskas (Chatham ’16) and Stuart Fairchild (Chatham ’16).

The MLB Draft continues today at 1 p.m. EST with rounds 3-10 before concluding with rounds 11-40 on Wednesday.
