Anglers visit Orleans tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (21-21) face the Orleans Firebirds (27-15) for the fifth time this season at Eldredge Park, Orleans tonight. So far, Chatham has notched a 1-3 record with the team, most recently suffering an 8-2 loss to the Firebirds at home July 9.

A victory over the Firebirds could allow the Anglers to surpass the Brewster Whitecaps (20-20-2) for third place in the East Division. The teams are currently deadlocked in a tie for the third seat behind Orleans and Yarmouth-Dennis (26-15-1).

Last night, six scoreless innings from starting pitcher Jeff Belge (St. John’s) fueled Chatham to a 4-2 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

“The key was Jeff Belge,” manager John Schiffner said. "Tonight he was ahead of the hitters, kept them off balance, [and] did a great job."

Belge allowed just one hit, striking out five in his outing.

“I feel like I had really good fastball command today, I got them to chase a couple of sliders and changeups that were out of the zone,” Belge said.

Catcher Fabian Peña (Manhattan) knocked in the game-winning run in the seventh, sending center fielder Mason Koppens (Northeastern) home on a sacrifice fly.

Shortstop Jeremy Peña (Maine) crossed the plate unhindered on a throwing error in the eighth to double the lead.

A two run Yarmouth-Dennis showing had equalized the game in the seventh, after second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) and Jeremy Peña drove in runs for Chatham in the fifth and sixth, respectively.

Relief pitchers RJ Freure (Pittsburgh), Andre Pallante (California Irvine) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) kept it steady in the final three frames.

Jacob Stevens (Boston College) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Stevens most recently appeared in the team’s 7-4 victory over Brewster July 26, allowing three earned runs with one strikeout over two innings.

The Firebirds enter the contest on a pair of losses, after falling to Brewster 6-2 Tuesday and Wareham (18-23-1) 6-5 Sunday. The team currently leads the East Division.

The Anglers square off against the Firebirds again at Veterans Field to close out regular season play Thursday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
