Anglers visit Yarmouth-Dennis tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (19-19) face the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (24-12-1) for the fifth time this season at Red Wilson Field, Yarmouth tonight. Chatham has a split record with the team, entering the contest on a pair of wins and two losses. The Anglers most recently fell to the Red Sox 7-2 at Veterans Field July 25.

Last night, five scoreless innings of relief from Joe Lienhard (Oklahoma State) fueled Chatham to a 4-2 victory over Falmouth (19-18-1).

“Joe Lienhard just did a fantastic job — he was a warrior tonight,” said manager John Schiffner. “That just stopped everything and he just did a fantastic job, allowed us to come back.”

Falmouth claimed an early advantage, when a bases-loaded walk of Austin Langworthy (Florida) sent Josh Breaux (McLennan) home in the top of the second.

Center fielder Mason Koppens (Northeastern) and left fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) knocked in runs in the bottom of the second, reclaiming the lead for Chatham.

Stowers drove right fielder Kyle Baker (Delaware) in on a single in the fourth. First baseman John Aiello (Wake Forest) secured the victory for the Anglers with a solo home run in the ninth.

“Again, [we had] clutch hitting,” Schiffner said. “Going into the last inning with a two-run lead is far better than a one run lead.”

Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) shut Falmouth down in the bottom of the ninth with three consecutive strikeouts.

Justin Lasko (Massachusetts Amherst) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Lasko most recently threw four scoreless frames in the team’s 1-0 extra innings loss to Wareham (16-20-1) July 20, his first appearance since returning to the Cape after a late June release.

The Red Sox bested the Orleans Firebirds (25-13) 4-2 Thursday, after a 6-5 loss to the Harwich Mariners (11-26-1) broke a nine-game winning streak.

The Anglers return to Veterans Field to host the Mariners Saturday.
