Anglers face Commodores for fourth, final time tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (18-19) face West Division leaders, the Falmouth Commodores (19-17-1) for the fourth and final time this season at Veterans Field tonight. After winning the season opener against Falmouth 8-7 June 14, Chatham picked up a pair of losses to the team 8-3 June 30 and 7-6 July 19.

Last night, clean execution and clutch hitting led the Anglers to a 7-4 victory over the Brewster Whitecaps (16-19-2) at Stony Brook Field, Brewster.

Left fielder Josh Stowers (Lousiville), first baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) and third baseman Ashton McGee (North Carolina) knocked in runs in the first inning, giving Chatham an early lead.

The Whitecaps answered quickly, overtaking the Anglers when Hunter Bishop (Arizona State) hit a two-run home run in the second and Mickey Gasper (Bryant) posted a two-run single in the third.

But a three-run Chatham sixth, driven by RBI singles from McGee and right fielder Landon Kay (Furman), teased a chance at victory away from Brewster. Kay knocked in two on the hit.

“I’ve been waiting for a good one like that for a while,” Kay said. “Yeah, it felt good. I just got a pitch I could hit, and took advantage of it.”

Relief pitcher Rodney Hutchison (North Carolina) shut the Whitecaps down over five scoreless innings, stepping in for starter Jacob Stevens (Boston College).

Jack DeGroat (Liberty) and Adam Wolf (Louisville) kept the slate blank over the final two frames.

“With Hutch in there, and then bringing in DeGroat and Wolf, you feel pretty confident,” Kay said. “When you have confidence in those guys, you end up being more loose at the plate and the field, and it just overall works really well.”

Stevens allowed four earned runs with one strikeout over two innings.

“This was a good example of what you need to do to win in this league,” said manager John Schiffner. “We had very good pitching — especially the relief pitching was excellent, we got some clutch hits, we executed and played good defense.”

Dan Hammer (Pittsburgh) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Hammer last appeared in the team’s 7-6 loss to Falmouth July 19, allowing seven earned runs with two strikeouts over 2.1 innings.

Falmouth bested Hyannis (13-21-3) 7-1 last night, after topping Bourne (19-17) 6-2 Tuesday. The team leads the Braves by one point for the first seat in the West Division.

The Anglers travel to Yarmouth-Dennis (23-12-1) Friday, before returning to Veterans Field to host Harwich (11-25-1) Saturday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
