Chatham seeks to snap eight-game Yarmouth-Dennis winning streak tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (17-18) face the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (22-11-1) for the fourth time this season at Veterans Field tonight. Since falling to Yarmouth-Dennis 11-8 June 21, Chatham notched a pair of victories over the team 4-0 July 3 and 9-5 July 8.

Sunday, five scoreless innings from starting pitcher Austin Bergner (North Carolina) and a two-run single from Mason Koppens (Northeastern) fueled the Anglers to a 5-2 victory over the Cotuit Kettleers (17-16-1).

“Starting pitching coming out strong like that’s huge for the whole game, it gets the offense in the game early,” Koppens said. “The bullpen just kind of kept it going — they’ve been doing that all season.”

Designated hitter Fabian Pena (Manhattan) opened scoring in the three-run second, driving third baseman John Aiello (Wake Forest) home on a double. After Koppens’ single, first baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) kept Chatham alive in the third, plating right fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

“We got clutch hitting — you can’t get hits every time up,” said manager John Schiffner. “We didn’t leave as many men on base as we have in the last few games.”

Reliever Adam Wolf (Louisville) came in with the scoreless two-frame save, striking out three. RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) stepped in for Bergner in the interim inning.

Jeff Belge (St. John’s) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Belge’s last start yielded six scoreless innings in the team’s 3-0 shutout of Harwich (10-24-1) July 15.

Yarmouth-Dennis enters the contest on an eight-game winning streak, and currently trails Orleans (24-11) for second place in East Division standings. The Red Sox most recently claimed a pair of victories over the Wareham Gatemen (16-17-1) 5-4 Friday and 8-3 Sunday.

The Anglers visit Brewster (15-18-2) Wednesday, before returning to Veterans Field to host Falmouth (17-17-1) Thursday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
