Take Five with Reiss Knehr

Chatham, Mass. — This evening, we’re taking five minutes in conversation with right-handed pitcher Reiss Knehr. Reiss is a rising junior at Fordham University in New York City, and has made eight appearances as a relief pitcher with the Anglers this season, throwing ten strikeouts over 9.1 innings. He had a scoreless outing against Orleans July 4, keeping the Firebirds off the basepaths with one strikeout and no hits.

When did you start playing baseball'

Knehr: I want to say when I was three or four, I played for a little league … called Cubs League. It was fun, a little tee ball action there.

You just finished your sophomore year at Fordham. How did you decide to go there — did you think about other schools'

Knehr: For me, it was early on. They saw me early, and they kind of gave me an option to say yes or no — I had to make a decision real quick and I was like I like it, so I might as well go.

What do you think the biggest difference has been between Cape League and college baseball'

Knehr: Just the level of play is way different. Every single hitter here is their three hitter everywhere else, so you’ve got to pitch to the same type of batter.

What’s your favorite major league team and player'

Knehr: I’m a New York Mets fan. Right now, I have to say [Aaron] Judge is my favorite player.

What’s your favorite game day breakfast — do you have one'

Knehr: Yeah, actually — four eggs scrambled, with well-done bacon and French fries.

Did you play any other sports growing up'

Knehr: Yeah, I played a bunch. I played hockey, football, basketball, wrestling, obviously baseball. I actually played a little lacrosse when I was younger too.

Do you have any pregame rituals that you do to get in the zone'

Knehr: Yeah, just like the same routine when you’re throwing and stuff. But I don’t like doing that because you get a little superstitious, and that’s the worst thing about baseball, superstition.

The Anglers return to action tomorrow night against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at Veterans Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
