Chatham seeks to avenge Friday loss against Cotuit tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (16-18) face the Cotuit Kettleers (17-15-1) for the fourth time this season at Lowell Park, Cotuit tonight. Chatham fell to the team 12-3 at Veterans Field Friday, after claiming a pair of victories 8-4 June 19 and 10-5 July 11.

Missed chances haunted the Anglers in Friday evening’s loss. Chatham loaded the bases three times, but choked at the plate.

“We left way too many guys on base, just way too many,” said manager John Schiffner. “We just didn’t capitalize. We needed clutch hits, [and] we didn’t get them.”

First baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) put the Anglers on the board the first, sending left fielder Jake Palomaki (Boston College) home on a bases-loaded single. After Cotuit overtook Chatham in the second, second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) knocked in a run to equalize the game.

Three two-run innings from the Kettleers uprooted Chatham’s early lead, before pair of home runs from Luke Alexander (Mississippi State) and Greyson Jenista (Wichita State) put the game out of reach for the Anglers.

On the mound, six pitchers carried Chatham through the loss. Adam Wolf (Louisville) had the only scoreless outing of the evening, striking out two Kettleers in the eighth inning. Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) escaped trouble in the ninth, limiting Cotuit to one unearned run and stranding two in scoring position on a strikeout.

Starter Jack Perkins (Stetson) handed the Kettleers four runs in the opening three frames.

Austin Bergner (North Carolina) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Bergner most recently earned the team’s 2-0 shutout of Bourne (17-16) July 16, striking out eight over 5.1 scoreless innings.

Prior to sweeping Chatham 12-3 Friday, Cotuit fell to Bourne 5-3 Thursday. The team currently co-leads the West Division with Falmouth (17-15-1).

The Anglers return to Veterans Field to host the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (21-11-1) Tuesday.
