Anglers seek to extend four-game winning streak at Falmouth tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (16-15) face the Falmouth Commodores (14-16-1) for the third time this season at Guv Fuller Field, Falmouth tonight. The teams currently share a split record — after edging Falmouth 8-7 in the season opener June 14, the Anglers fell to the Commodores 8-3 June 30.

Last night, the Anglers surpassed the Brewster Whitecaps (15-15-1) for third place in the East Division with a 5-3 victory at Veterans Field.

Chatham claimed an early lead, when an error plated left fielder Jake Palomaki (Boston College), and first baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) knocked in a run on a single in the first.

Palomaki struck again, driving in a run on a groundout in the second. Third baseman John Aiello (Wake Forest) followed in the fifth, sending right fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) home on a sacrifice fly.

“We’re just on time for pitches, playing loose and I think that’s the biggest thing,” Aiello said. “We’re really confident right now — it’s kind of contagious.”

A run on error put Brewster on the board in the third. The team plated two in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch and a groundout, but designated hitter Shea Langeliers (Baylor) secured the victory for Chatham with a home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Five different Anglers combined on the mound. Starter Jacob Stevens (Boston College) struck out four over four innings, before Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) provided three scoreless innings of relief. Reiss Knehr (Fordham), Andre Pallante (California — Irvine) and Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) combined for the final two frames.

Dan Hammer (Pittsburgh) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Hammer most recently took the team’s 9-3 loss to Brewster July 12, allowing six earned runs over two innings.

“Dan obviously got hit around a little bit last time — his breaking ball wasn’t there when he usually has a good one, and obviously pitching without a secondary pitch in this league is very tough,” said pitching coach Rob Bono. “So he worked hard all week, and I think he’s looking forward to getting back out there and competing.”

Last night, the Commodores fell to the Orleans Firebirds (21-10) 2-0 in extra frames at Eldredge Park, Orleans. The team is currently tied for third place with the Wareham Gatemen (14-16-1) in the West Division.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 5:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
