Anglers visit Harwich tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (13-15) face the Harwich Mariners (10-16-1) for the fourth time this season at Whitehouse Field, Harwich tonight. Chatham shares a 1-2 record with the team, after recording 11-2 and 7-3 losses to the Mariners June 23 July 2, and claiming one 3-2 victory July 1.

Last night, a three-run eleventh fueled by left fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) and catcher Cody Roberts (North Carolina) lifted the Anglers above the Bourne Braves (14-13) 4-1 in extra innings.

After ten innings yielded a tie of one, Stowers claimed the victory for Chatham with a two-run bases loaded single. Roberts knocked in an insurance run on a single to widen the lead to three.

“That’s the key,” said manager John Schiffner. “You’ve got to have clutch base hits.”

Designated hitter Ashton McGee (North Carolina) put Chatham (13-15) on the board in the fifth, plating Stowers on a fielder’s choice.

On the mound, relief pitcher Jack DeGroat (Liberty) struck out six over the final three innings.

“I tried to keep consistent with each pitch and just do the same thing over and over again, [and] stay around the zone,” DeGroat said. “I’ve been closing for most of the year — I’ve been having the one inning, so it’s nice to get to stretch out like that.”

Starter Jack Perkins (Stetson) kept it clean, striking out six over five innings. RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) dealt two strikeouts in three innings for his fourth scoreless outing of the summer.

Jeff Belge (St. John’s) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Belge most recently took the team’s 8-2 loss to Orleans July 9, allowing three earned runs over four innings.

Harwich enters the contest on a three game-winning streak, after besting Wareham (11-15-1) 4-3 Friday and Yarmouth-Dennis (15-11-1) 7-3 Thursday. The team edged Bourne 3-1 Tuesday.

The Anglers face the Braves for the second time this week at Veterans Field Sunday.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 5:10 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
