Chatham seeks first victory over Hyannis tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (12-14) face the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (10-13-2) for the fourth time this season at Veterans Field tonight.

Chatham has yet to best Hyannis, after falling to the team by tallies of 8-5 and 9-2 in a road doubleheader June 25, and dropping a home contest 5-3 June 20.

Last night, the Anglers surrendered seven runs to the Brewster Whitecaps (12-13-1) in the first two innings of a 9-3 loss.

Despite loading the bases twice, Chatham was unable to execute enough timely hitting to recover from the deficit.

“I wouldn’t really say we struggled. We kind of hit some balls hard at people,” said designated hitter John Aiello (Wake Forest). “We also didn’t capitalize on situations where we had guys in scoring position — I think if we did that, we would have got five or six runs.”

Aiello drove in left fielder Jake Palomaki (Boston College) on a knock out to center field in the fifth for Chatham’s first score of the evening. A walkoff walk of third baseman Ashton McGee (North Carolina) and a single from shortstop Jeremy Pena (Maine) plated runners in the ninth, but the game was out of reach for the Anglers.

On the mound, relievers Joe Lienard (Oklahoma State), Nick Rand (Massachusetts — Lowell) and Reiss Knehr (Fordham) combined to allow just two runs over seven innings.

Starter Dan Hammer (Pittsburgh) took the loss over the first two frames.

Left-handed pitcher Cameron Bishop (California — Irvine) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Bishop earned the team’s 4-2 victory over Orleans (16-10), throwing eight strikeouts over three scoreless innings.

“He was lights out last time, [he] threw three great innings,” said pitching coach Rob Bono. “He’s facing a heavy left-handed hitting team, so we set it up where it’s going to give him the most success possible.”

After tying Cotuit (14-11-1) 9-9 Monday, Hyannis bested the Kettleers 3-2 Wednesday. The Harbor Hawks currently sit at last place in the West Division, trailing the Wareham Gatemen (11-14-1) by one point.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
