Chatham hosts Orleans tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (10-12) host the Orleans Firebirds (14-8) at Veterans Field tonight. Chatham broke a ten-game Orleans winning streak with a 4-2 victory over the Firebirds July 5, after suffering a pair of 4-3 road losses to the team July 4 and June 22.

Last night, an eighth-inning grand slam from designated hitter Shea Langeliers (Baylor) fueled the Anglers to a 9-5 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (11-10-1).

“At first, I didn’t think it was going to be a grand slam,” Langeliers said. “A guy was camped right by the fence and he was going to catch it so I was like alright — it’s a go-ahead RBI, I’ll take that. And then he jumped up and I was just praying for it to go over, and it ended up going over.”

First baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) and shortstop Jeremy Peña (Maine) also found the back of fence with home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

A series of strong performances on the mound preserved the victory for the Anglers. Starter Jack Perkins (Stetson) limited the Red Sox to one run over five innings.

“This time I was just trying to get it low in the zone, just let them hit it into the ground, and not try and do too much up there,” Perkins said. “Last time [against Falmouth], that’s not what I was doing.”

RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) denied Yarmouth-Dennis with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings of relief.

“The real key was RJ slowing things down — he just stopped them in their tracks,” said manager John Schiffner. “They tied it up and he just said “no, no - we’re going to keep it right here,” and then Shea’s home run made the difference.”

Jeff Belge (St. John’s) will take the mound for the Anglers tonight. Belge last appeared in the team’s 3-2 victory over Harwich (7-14-1) July 1, limiting the Mariners to one earned run with eight strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

Chandler Day (Vanderbilt) will start for the Firebirds. Day earned a 17-3 win over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (9-12-1) July 1, allowing three earned runs over five innings.

Last night, Orleans fell to Hyannis 2-1 at Eldredge Park, Orleans. Jaxx Groshans (Kansas) drove in the lone run to claim an early lead in the second inning.

The Anglers visit Wareham (10-11-1) Monday, before traveling to Cotuit (13-9) for a makeup game Tuesday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen to the live broadcast here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
