Four-run rally fuels Chatham to 4-2 victory over Orleans, snaps ten-game Firebirds winning streak

Chatham, Mass. — Along came one. And another one. As night crept over Veterans Field, the Anglers began to mount a charge of hits against local rival Orleans in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Orleans (14-7) had struck first, when Stephen Scott (Vanderbilt) hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth. But Chatham answered back.

Second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) hit the equalizing run, sending right fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) across home plate. Then, the momentum began to build.

First baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) doubled off the left field fence with full force, before designated hitter Shea Langeliers (Baylor) and catcher Fabian Pena (Manhattan) plated runners on a single and groundout, respectively.

“The timely hits win games, and we had a few guys come up — Patten came up big with that ball off the wall,” Shaw said. “We need everybody to step up to be good.”

Chatham stymied the Orleans offensive threat with a series of effective performances on the mound. Adam Hill (South Carolina) sent the Firebirds down in order in the first two innings, dealing four strikeouts over four frames in total.

Relief pitcher Cameron Bishop (California — Irvine) blanked Orleans with a storm of eight strikeouts over three scoreless innings, before Rodney Hutchison Jr. (North Carolina) dealt three strikeouts in the two-inning save.

“Hill was outstanding, he reached what we felt was a comfortable pitch count for him,” said manager John Schiffner. “What can you say about Bishop when he came in? He just slammed the door shut — so did Hutch.”

Scott added a bases-loaded RBI groundout in the top of the eighth, but the game was out of reach for the Firebirds.

After Chatham's 4-3 loss to the Firebirds Tuesday, the victory snapped Orleans’ league-high winning streak of ten games.

“You need more than two games consistently, but we’re playing pretty good baseball,” Schiffner said. “Pitching was great, and in this league if you can pitch, you’re going to win a lot of games.”

The Anglers visit Cotuit (11-9) Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
