Chatham seeks to capitalize on Saturday's successes over Harwich in away matchup tonight

Chatham, Mass. — After last night’s meeting resulted in a 3-2 victory for Chatham, the Anglers (7-10) face the Harwich Mariners (5-10-1) for the second time in two days at Whitehouse Field, Harwich tonight.

Saturday, the teams entered the ninth inning deadlocked in a tie of one. Travis Monoit (Orange County Community College) hit a double to right field to claim the lead for Harwich in the top of the ninth, but Chatham’s right fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) capitalized on a fielder’s choice to equalize the game for the second time.

Harwich relief pitcher Cole Aker (North Carolina) surrendered the game to Chatham with a two-out bases-loaded walk of center fielder Mason Koppens (Northeastern).

“The last inning, we had all the pitchers come down from the bullpen into the dugout and everyone was fired up,” said starting pitcher Jeff Belge (St. John’s).

Belge dealt eight strikeouts over 4.1 scoreless innings, before Eli Nabholz (Millersville), RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) and Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) combined for 4.2 innings of relief.

“The last inning he [Belge] pitched the last time he was out … was very good,” said manager John Schiffner. “He was really strong, his velocity was very good, he had real good control down in the zone and that’s pretty much the way he pitched tonight.”

Jacob Stevens (Boston College) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Stevens most recently took a 5-3 loss to Hyannis (7-9-1) June 25, allowing three earned runs with one strikeout over 3.0 innings.

Tyler Baum (North Carolina) will start for the Mariners. Baum has drawn wins in both of his Cape League appearances, posting a complete game with nine strikeouts over 7.0 innings against the Wareham Gatemen (7-10) June 25. He previously denied Hyannis with three strikeouts over 6.0 scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory June 18.

Saturday’s loss to the Anglers extended the Mariners’ losing streak to five, after the team fell to Orleans (11-6) 9-1 Friday, Yarmouth-Dennis (10-6-1) 12-1 Wednesday and Cotuit (8-9) 3-0 Tuesday. Harwich dropped the second contest of a doubleheader against Wareham 5-1 Sunday.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 5:10 p.m. — listen to the live broadcast here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
