Anglers bested by Falmouth 8-3

Chatham, Mass. — Three home runs fueled the Falmouth Commodores (9-7) to an 8-3 victory over the Anglers (6-10) at Veterans Field Friday. The contest marked Chatham’s third consecutive defeat this week, after the team suffered a pair of losses to Brewster 11-1 and 6-4 Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Third baseman Antonio Ralat (Alabama — Birmingham), right fielder Donovan Casey (Boston College) and second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) paced the Anglers with one hit and one RBI apiece.

Falmouth claimed an early lead, when Hunter Steinmetz (Missouri State) and Trevor Larnach (Oregon State) posted no-out home runs in the top of the first.

“They just came right out roaring right away,” said manager John Schiffner. “That’s a good baseball team — we got them before other really good players got in town.”

“It was a grind, and they had a good start,” Ralat said. “We kept fighting.”

Cameron O’Neill (Holy Cross) widened the advantage for Falmouth with a two-run single in the top of the third. Shaw put Chatham on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

Casey added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth, before Ralat sent shortstop Jeremy Peña (Maine) home on a single to narrow the deficit.

Zeke Dodson (Lipscomb) hit a solo home run — Falmouth’s third of the contest — in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach for Chatham.

Starter Jack Perkins (Stetson) allowed seven earned runs with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Rodney Hutchison Jr. (North Carolina) dealt two strikeouts over 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, before Nick Rand (Massachusetts — Lowell) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) completed the game.

Tyler Blohm (Maryland) handed Chatham one earned run with six strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Connor Eason (Seminole State), Ian Koch (Western Illinois), William Ethridge (Mississippi) and Josh Breaux (McLennan) combined for 5.0 innings of relief.

“There’s … enough good players on that team that the leadership has to take over a little bit,” Schiffner said. “They’re very good players, and right now a lot of them are not playing up to their potentials.”

“Our team is very, very competitive — we like to fight,” Ralat said. “We’ve just got to keep grinding — it’s a long season. It’s all going to click eventually.”

The Anglers host the Harwich Mariners (5-9-1) Saturday at Veterans Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
