Anglers swept by Hyannis in away doubleheader

The Anglers (5-7) fell to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (5-6-1) by tallies of 8-5 and 9-2 in a pair of contests at McKeon Park, Hyannis Sunday. Catcher Shea Langeliers (Baylor) led the Anglers with 6 RBIs and four hits —  including two home runs — for the day, but Chatham was unable to generate enough offense to claim a victory.

Game 1: Hyannis 8, Chatham 5

Hyannis’ Micah Coffey (Minnesota) and Ryan Olenek (Mississippi) crossed the plate on bases-loaded walks to open scoring in the bottom of the second inning, before Reece Hampton (North Carolina) added an RBI single.

Langeliers hit a solo home run in the fourth, but Hyannis responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Hampton notched an RBI single and scored on a passed ball, before Jake Mangum (Mississippi State) crossed the plate on an error. Dominic DiCaprio (Rice) posted a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to widen the lead for the Harbor Hawks.

Langeliers narrowed the deficit with a grand slam in the top of the seventh, but the game was out of reach for Chatham.

Starter Jacob Stevens (Boston College) allowed three earned runs with one strikeout over 3.0 innings, before Reiss Knehr (Fordham) and Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) combined for 3.0 innings of relief.

Michael Brettell (Central Michigan) earned the win for Hyannis, handing Chatham one earned run with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Nick Sandlin (Southern Mississippi) completed the game in relief.

Game 2: Hyannis 9, Chatham 2

Designated hitter Langeliers opened scoring with an RBI triple in the top of the first, before first baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) sent him home on a sacrifice fly to widen the lead to two.

A six-run second inning rally secured the victory for the Harbor Hawks. Robert Neustrom (Iowa) posted an RBI single and a three-run home run for the Harbor Hawks in the bottom of the second, while Hampton notched a two-run double. Brendan Donovan (South Alabama) and Mangum added insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth.

“Some of us our pressing and trying to do too much at the plate, and then we’re playing these other teams and they’re getting the soft hits,” Langeliers said. “For us to get a hit right now, it seems like you have to hit it at a hundred miles an hour.”

Starter Austin Bergner (North Carolina) took the loss for the Anglers, allowing one earned run with two strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Eli Nabholz (Millersville) and Rodney Hutchinson Jr. (North Carolina) combined for 3.0 innings of relief. Hutchinson preserved the score with a scoreless final inning.

Ryan Weiss (Wright State) handed Chatham two earned runs with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Christian Tripp (New Mexico) and Ethan Larrison (Indiana State) completed the game in relief.

“We didn’t get very good pitching, we didn’t hit the ball very well, [and] we made some errors we shouldn’t have made,” said manager John Schiffner. “We’ve got to figure it out.”

“We weren’t all there as a team today,” Langeliers said. “We’ve got to bounce back.”

The Anglers host the Bourne Braves (6-4) at Veterans Field Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
