by Dan D'Uva, 12-14-2007

Three A's Named All-Americans, Seven to Wallace Watch List Chatham A's Danny Espinosa (Long Beach State), Tim Federowicz (UNC) and Zach Putnam (Michigan) have been named preseason All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. All three players are preparing to embark on their junior seasons.

Espinosa, named to the All-American 2nd Team, played shortstop in Chatham his freshman year in the summer of 2006. Danny began that season with a 13 game hitting streak and finished with a a team-high 41 hits, playing in all 44 games. The switch hitter from Santa Ana, CA was a fixture in the two hole that summer, knocking in 15 with seven doubles, two triples and a homer. Espinosa hit .319 his sophomore season at The Beach and was slated to return to Chatham for the 2007 summer, but was selected to join the Team USA roster.

Federowicz, the All-American 2nd Team catcher, was plucked from Chatham's 2006 roster by Team USA, but elected to play for Chatham for his sophomore summer in 2007. After leading the Tar Heels to their second consecutive College World Series Championship Series, Tim hit .297 in 28 games with 14 RBIs and a .407 slugging percentage on Cape Cod. At Chapel Hill, Federowicz started all 73 games, hitting .333 with 65 RBIs while also coming out of the bullpen 19 times.

First team All-American utility player Zach Putnam was kept from Chatham in 2006 because of injury, but turned down Team USA for 2007 and starred as a DH and pitcher for the A's instead. John Schiffner calls Putnam one of the best two way players in the country. As a pitcher for Chatham, Putnam was 2-0 with an 0.75 ERA, allowing just one run in 12 innings over the course of two starts and two bullpen appearances. In the batter's box, Zach hit .256 in 90 at bats with four long balls and 13 RBIs. As a Wolverine, Putnam hit .330 as a sophomore and helped Michigan upset Vanderbilt in the 2007 Regionals.
