Anglers snap losing streak with 5-4 victory over Brewster

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (5-5) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Brewster Whitecaps (4-4-1) at Veterans Field Saturday.

Brewster struck first, when Michael Gasper (Bryant) sent AJ Graffanino home on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Martin Costes (Maryland) crossed the plate in the top of the second, before Gasper widened the lead with an RBI single.

Chatham mounted a five-run rally in the third inning to reclaim the advantage. Second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) posted a two run bases-loaded RBI single to right field, before right fielder Jacob Olson (South Carolina) and designated hitter Shea Langeliers (Baylor) added RBI doubles.

Brewster’s Michael Curry (Georgia) sent Kyle Datres (North Carolina) home on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, but the game was out of reach for the Whitecaps.

Center fielder DJ Artis (Liberty) made a bases-loaded diving catch in the top of the eighth to preserve the score.

“It was a great team win,” Shaw said. “We had a couple tough innings where we battled our way through.”

“We got clutch everything — clutch hitting, clutch defense, clutch pitching,” said manager John Schiffner. “They came back at us, and we wouldn’t let them finish us off.”

Starter Jeff Belge (St. John’s) allowed one earned run with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings, before Dan Metzdorf (Boston College), Ryan Hedrick (Presbyterian) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) combined for 6.0 innings of relief. Metzdorf earned the win with no earned runs and 2 strikeouts over 3.0 innings, while DeGroat posted a scoreless two-inning save.

Paul Milto (Indiana) took the loss for the Whitecaps, handing Chatham five earned runs with two strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Jonathan Stiever (Indiana) completed the game in relief.

“As we keep on playing, we’re learning to play more and more as a team,” Shaw said. “These innings where we give up a bunch of runs aren’t going to keep happening.”

The Anglers visit Hyannis (3-6-1) for a doubleheader Sunday. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 3 p.m.
