Anglers bested by Yarmouth-Dennis, 11-8

Yarmouth, Mass. — Despite posting a lead of six by the sixth inning, the Anglers (4-3) fell to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (4-1-1) 11-8 at Red Wilson Field, Yarmouth Wednesday. Catcher Cody Roberts (North Carolina) led Chatham with a pair of hits and 3 RBIs, while first baseman Austin Edens (Samford) notched one hit and two RBIs.

The Anglers struck first, when Edens and shortstop Jeremy Peña (Maine) notched RBI singles in the top of the fourth.

Yarmouth-Dennis’ Nicholas Quintana (Arizona) and Kole Cottam (Kentucky) responded with back-to-back home runs to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, but designated hitter Nick Patten (Delaware) reclaimed the advantage for Chatham with an RBI single in the top of the fifth.

Roberts added a three-run home run in the fifth, before right fielder Jacob Olson (South Carolina) widened the lead with an RBI double in the top of the sixth.

A nine-run eighth inning rally lifted the Red Sox above the Anglers. Kyle Isbel (Nevada Las Vegas) and Quintana crossed the plate on consecutive wild pitches, before Carter Pharis (Alabama — Birmingham) and Alex McKenna (Cal Poly) followed with RBI singles. Nico Hoerner (Stanford) and Isbel hit back-to-back home runs to put the game out of reach for Chatham.

“We played eight good innings out of nine — we just didn’t get things done there in the eighth inning,” said field manager John Schiffner. “That happens.”

“Once they started stringing a couple of hits together, they just had a lot of confidence,” Roberts said. “They just kind of hit balls in the right spots to get hits.”

Starter Justin Lasko (Massachusetts — Amherst) threw six strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Ryan Hedrick (Presbyterian), Reiss Knehr (Fordham) and Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) combined for 4.0 innings of relief.

Tim Brennan (St Joseph’s) threw three strikeouts over 4.2 innings for the Red Sox, before Cameron Beauchamp (Indiana), Hunter Parsons (Maryland) and Karl Kauffmann (Michigan) shared the game in relief. Parsons earned the win with one strikeout over a scoreless inning.

“I don’t think it rattles our confidence at all,” Roberts said. “We’re just going to have to bounce back tomorrow with a lot of energy and get a big win.”

The Anglers will face the Orleans Firebirds (3-5) Thursday at Eldredge Park, Orleans. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
