Anglers fall to Hyannis, 5-3

Chatham, Mass. — Despite posting an early lead in the first inning, the Anglers (4-2) fell to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (3-2) 5-3 at Veterans Field Tuesday. Shortstop Antonio Ralat (Alabama - Birmingham) paced Chatham with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, while second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John's) notched a pair of hits and one RBI.

First baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) drove left fielder Jake Palomaki (Boston College) home on an RBI single to open scoring in the first inning.

Hyannis’ Ryan Olenek (Mississippi) tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, before Ford Proctor (Rice) posted a three-run home run in the sixth. Chris Proctor (Duke) added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Catcher Fabian Pena (Manhattan) and Ralat both crossed the plate in the seventh. The Anglers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to generate enough offense to snap the loss.

“I don’t think we got the two out hits we needed or the timely hitting, but we can’t do it every day,” Palomaki said. “We gave ourselves a chance, and that’s all you can do,” Palomaki said.

“We didn’t get clutch hits,” said field manager John Schiffner. "We got on base, but we needed some clutch hits, [and] we didn’t get those.”

Starter Adam Hill (South Carolina) limited the Harbor Hawks to one earned run in 5.0 innings, before Bo Burrup (Brigham Young) and RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) combined for 4.0 innings of relief. Freure threw three strikeouts over two scoreless innings.

Ryan Weiss (Wright State) earned the win for Hyannis with seven strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Davis Vainer (Alabama), Ethan Larrison (Indiana State) and Christian Tripp (New Mexico) shared the game in relief.

“This is a good team. They’re going to be fine,” Schiffner said. "They’re good baseball players, they’ll come back tomorrow and they’ll be ready to play.”

“We’re just going to keep playing the same way we’ve been playing,” Palomaki said. “Play every game hard, and you’ll come out ahead most of the time.”

The Anglers visit Yarmouth-Dennis (3-1-1) Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Red Wilson Field.
