Despite low visibility due to heavy fog, the Anglers (3-1) swept the Wareham Gatemen (2-3) by tallies of 8-3 and 6-1 at Veterans Field Sunday. First baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) led Chatham with two home runs and five RBIs for the day, while center fielder DJ Artis (Liberty) posted a pair of RBIs across the contests.

Game 1: Chatham 8, Wareham 3

The Anglers struck first, posting an early lead of three in the first inning. Artis opened scoring on an RBI from right fielder Jacob Olson (South Carolina), before catcher Fabian Pena (Manhattan) drove second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) home on a sacrifice fly. First baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) crossed the plate on an RBI single from shortstop Jimmy Titus (Bryant) to widen the lead. 

Wareham’s Willie MacIver (Washington) hit a three-run home run to tie the game in the top of the fifth, but Patten answered with a two-run home run for the Anglers in the bottom of the inning. Artis and Shaw notched RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth, putting the game out of reach for the Gatemen.

“A lot of guys look very good at the plate,” Patten said. “I’m just very confident that we’re going to hit this year.” 

Starter Jacob Stevens (Boston College) threw three strikeouts over 4.0 innings, before Ryan Hedrick (Presbyterian) and Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) combined for three innings of relief.

Wareham starter Blakely Brown (Georgia) allowed three earned runs with two strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Justin Hagenman (Penn State) and Will Neely (Tennessee) completed the game in relief.

“We played really, really good baseball, and we were solid in most areas of the game,” said field manager John Schiffner. “We hit the ball well, we pitched well, we played good defense.”

Game 2: Chatham 6, Wareham 1

Similarly to the previous game, Chatham posted a lead of three in the first inning. Olson put the Anglers on the board with an RBI double, before Patten notched a two-run home run, his second of the day. 

Left fielder Mason Koppens (Northeastern) added an RBI in the bottom of the second, sending third baseman Antonio Ralat (Alabama — Birmingham) home to widen the advantage to four. 

Willie MacIver (Washington) crossed the plate on an RBI single from Blake Sabol (Southern California) in the top of the fourth, but Koppens ran home on a wild pitch in the fifth to secure the victory for Chatham. Artis added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, sending Ralat home on an RBI single.

Starter John Signore (Fairfield) threw five strikeouts over 5.0 innings, before Nick Silva (Maine) provided two scoreless innings of relief.

Right-handed pitcher Fitzpatrick Stadler (Arizona State) threw two strikeouts over 2.0 innings for the Gatemen. Tanner Dodson (California) and Brad Case (Rollins) combined for 4.0 innings of relief.

“It was great,” Patten said. “It was a lot of fun to come out here with a new group of guys, and to just be able to compete and win two games.”

“Any time you have the opportunity to win two games in one day, it’s a good day,” Schiffner said. “It gives us some confidence.”

The Anglers will face the Cotuit Kettleers (4-0) in a make-up game tomorrow at Veterans Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
