Chatham falls to Bourne, 4-3

Bourne, Mass. — Despite leading the game in hits 7-5, the Anglers (1-1) fell to the Bourne Braves 4-3 at Doran Park, Bourne Thursday.

The Anglers fielded a different starting lineup against the Braves (1-1), featuring five batters that did not appear in Wednesday’s season opener at Falmouth.

After three scoreless innings, shortstop Jimmy Titus (Bryant) put the Anglers on the board with an RBI single to left field. In the top of the fifth, second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) sent shortstop Jeremy Peña (Maine) home with a single up the middle to widen the advantage to two.

Bourne rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead. Outfielder Mason Koppens (Northeastern) scored in the bottom of the ninth, but the game was out of reach.

“We came out and fought today,” Titus said. “We just couldn’t pull out the win.”

“We showed a little life late in the game, and that’s good,” said field manager John Schiffner.

Starter Taylor Luciani (Quinnipiac) limited the Braves to one earned run over 4.1 innings, denying Bourne a hit until the bottom of the fifth. Luciani finished with three strikeouts, before RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) and Bo Burrup (Brigham Young) combined for 4.2 innings of relief.

Bourne’s Christopher Holba (East Carolina) allowed two earned runs over 4.1 innings, before Brian Eichhorn (Georgia Southern), Kyle Marman (Florida Atlantic) and Tyler Barrs (Rhode Island) divided the remaining innings.

“Every day we’ve got to come out here and fight and work,” Titus said. “That’s what it’s all about.”

The Anglers will host the Cotuit Kettleers (2-0) tomorrow night in the home opener at Veterans Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
