Chatham edges Falmouth, 8-7 in season opener

Falmouth, Mass. — The Anglers (1-0) opened season play at Falmouth Wednesday, topping the Commodores (0-1) in a one-run game 8-7. Outfielder Jacob Olson (South Carolina) led Chatham with two RBIs and a pair of runs, while shortstop Jeremy Pena (Maine) also notched a run and two RBIs.

The Anglers delivered a convincing showing at the plate, posting a lead of four in the first inning. Olson put the team on the board with an RBI single to right field, before catcher Fabian Pena (Manhattan) drove home second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s). Olson and first baseman Austin Edens (Samford) crossed home plate on a bases-loaded single from outfielder Mason Koppens (Northeastern) to widen the advantage.

Olson added a solo home run in the top of the second, before Clayton Daniel sent Cameron O’Neill home on a single in the third for Falmouth’s first score of the evening. Shaw and Jeremy Pena notched RBIs in the sixth and seventh innings to increase Chatham’s lead to six.

The Commodores rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but relief pitcher Eli Nabholz (Millersville) denied Falmouth scoring in the final two innings to preserve the lead.

“Any time you get a fairly decent lead, ... you can get complacent,” said field manager John Schiffner. “They [Falmouth] threw some pretty good arms at us, and we battled them.”

Starter Justin Lasko (Massachusetts — Amherst) allowed two earned runs with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings, before Reiss Knehr (Fordham) and Nabholz combined for four innings of relief.

“It felt pretty good,” Olson said. “I think we’ve got a real good shot.”

The Anglers will return to action tonight against the Bourne Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Doran Park, Bourne.
