Chatham ended the regular season on a tear but never could get it going in the playoffs as the A's season ended Sunday with a 4-0 loss to the Y-D Red Sox at Veteran's Field.

The Y-D win completes a two-game sweep of Chatham in the Eastern Division Championship Series. The Red Sox will meet the Falmouth Commodores in the best-of-three Cape League Championship Series, which gets underway Monday.

The Red Sox grabbed the lead right away off Cape League Pitcher of the Year Tom Milone (USC) in the top of the first. Gordon Beckham (Georgia) hit a two-out, two-strike, two-run homer to give Y-D a 2-0 lead. The homer, Beckham's tenth of the summer, plated Buster Posey (Florida St.), who singled with one out.

Milone did not allow a run over the next six innings, but the Chatham offense never could get going against Y-D starter Scott Green (Kentucky). Chatham managed only three hits off Green in 6 1/3 innings, who walked only one batter and struck out seven. The A's best chance to score came in the first inning, when Addison Johnson (Clemson) singled to leadoff the game and two batter Kyle Seager (UNC) walked. Green bounced back to the retire the next three men, however, and coasted through the next five plus frames.

In the eighth, Y-D got some insurance off Milone with a one-out Nick Romero (San Diego St.) solo homer. Milone faced one more batter, getting Joe Railey (San Francisco) to fly out, before giving way to Kevin Couture (USC).

The Red Sox plated one more in the ninth off Couture on another solo home run, this one by Jason Castro (Stanford).

Trailing 4-0, the A's prayed for a miracle in the bottom of the ninth against stud closer Nick Cassavechia (Baylor), who had already blown two saves this season against Chatham. The A's managed a one-out baserunner when Tim Federowicz (UNC) was hit by a pitch, but then Jeremy Synan (N.C. State) grounded into a season ending 6-4-3 double play.

Before the game, the A's handed out their regular season awards in a special presentation at Veteran's Field. Here are the men who took home the hardware:

Eddie Lyons Coaches Award: Addison Johnson (Clemson)
Zane Carlsen Outstanding Relief Pitcher Award: Kevin Couture (USC)
Ed Baird Outstanding Pitcher Award: Tom Milone (USC)
Matt Fincher "Silver Slugger" Award: Allan Dykstra (Wake Forest)
Willard Nicholas Most Oustanding Player: Jermaine Curtis (UCLA)
