Notebook: Game 26 vs. Harwich

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers are back in action today as they play host to the Harwich Mariners at 7 p.m. at Veterans Field.

Chatham (11-14) enters the contest following two straight losses – though both games were close affairs. The Mariners (16-8-1), who currently hold first place in the East Division, return to Veterans Field with one win in their past three games. After downing the Bourne Braves 1-0 on July 6, Harwich has stumbled, losing a 1-0 contest to Hyannis before drawing with the Wareham Gatemen, 3-3.

At the Plate: Jeremy Vasquez looks to build off of Saturday’s two-hit day with a solid outing against Harwich. Against Falmouth yesterday, Vasquez reached base three times thanks to two singles and a fourth inning walk. The Florida product also scored a run off of a wild pitch in the seventh.

In the six games that Vasquez has played for the Anglers this season, the sophomore first baseman has scored twice while recording three hits and a walk. Vazquez has struck out three times in 21 at-bats.

While Ernie Clement has been the driving force behind the Harwich offense this season, Anthony Critelli has catalyzed the Mariners’ bats recently. The Holy Cross Crusader enters Sunday’s contest in the midst of a four-game hitting streak – dating back to a four-hit performance on July 4 against Brewster.

In that four game span, Critelli has compiled a .583 average to go along with his seven hits, two runs, and three doubles.

On the Rubber: Parker Rigler (0-1) makes his second start for Chatham a full week removed from his starting debut on July 3 at Orleans. In that outing, Rigler pitched four innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and four walks. The Kansas State southpaw also struck out two batters in his start at Eldredge Park.

This season, Rigler has appeared in four games, crafting a 3.37 ERA and striking out six. Though the junior has conceded three earned runs during his time as an Angler, Chatham has won one game that Rigler has thrown in – a 5-0 trouncing of Yarmouth-Dennis on June 22.

The Mariners send Shane McCarthy (1-1) to the hill, looking to take their second of three games over Chatham this season. The Seton Hall product has made four starts for Harwich, piecing together a 1.50 ERA – third best amongst starters on a Mariners’ pitching staff that has been the best in the CCBL all year. In 24 innings pitched, McCarthy has allowed four earned runs and has struck out 17.

Down the Road: After an off day tomorrow, the Anglers will welcome the Bourne Braves to Veterans Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before heading to Whitehouse Field for a 6:30 rematch with Harwich.
